Here’s a demo shown at the VGX 2013 event, highlighting the Snowdrop engine being used for The Division game.
well, that was disappointing, expected more explanations and more showcases.
I have a hard time believing the final game will be like this. Ubisoft isn’t above target renders. We’ll have to see though. If it is, good on them. Too bad the game’s an MMO.
It’s a tech demo. They always crank it to 11 on these videos.
The game proper won’t looks as good as that, at least on consoles.
The thing that bothers me is the name, snowdrop is not even a proper word, you can have a raindrop or a snowflake, but this just sounds wrong.
Also, what’s with the ice based names for engines? Frostbite, snowdrop and I think there was another one.
Snowdrop is a desperately weak sounding name. Over here we have the Avalanche engine, and then over here there is… snowdrop. D’aww
There’s Snowdrop, Avalanche (Just Cause), Frostbite, Glacier (Hitman), and I think that’s it, or at least that’s as many as I can think of.
Would be funny if Valve’s new engine is some snow/ice name if it isn’t Source 2. Is there a related word that has anything to do with steam that isn’t frost?
Ehm, not to insult you or anything, but Snowdrop is a flower.

wow, who gives a crap about the name of an engine? that discussion is pathetic
Chill out bro, jesus. We were just commenting on the recent thread of ice based names for engines.
Anyway, snowdrop looks brilliant. The destruction tech seems pretty damn amazing.
Oh yeah, my bad, I knew what that flower is called in Russian tho. Maybe I’d be insulted if English was my first language, I dunno.
Don’t tell me to chill out! I AM PERFECTLY CHILLED OUT!!! }:-[
jokes aside, yeah, the destruction thing looks really cool. I also really like the volumetric look of the smoke. Let’s hope they implemented it themselves and don’t rely on some proprietary crap that locks out like 50% of their customers.
I was still hoping to see more than this very short video. There’s definitelly more to tell about this engine.
Liking this engine so far. Looks to be on par with the Cry Engine, at least visually. I would like to see more of its physics, though.
On the subject of cool engine names, Watch Dogs’ engine is called “Disrupt” and it was built from the ground up for next gen. Kinda odd that Ubi made all these seperate engines for these games. Unless Snowdrop is based on Disrupt in some way…
Maybe each engine is more suited for their own different types of games. I guess it keeps things looking “fresh” as opposed to having multiple games on one engine and having them all look too similar.
Can’t say for sure, though.
Ubisoft loves their engines. I wonder how much money it is spent to maintain multiple engines vs an universal one.
Staying within the same theme, VALVe’s new engine will be called Snource.
