The Crossfire Update - Content Update 0.2.0

Anyone else notice on the level QE, the grunts in the lobby immediately notice you the second you round the corner and see them, preventing you from hearing their scripted conversation?

UPDATE: I think it had something to do with directly loading that map from the console, and broke the sequence. because I played the level normally and it worked…so never mind.

To be honest, the RPG to me looks the exact same as it did when the game was first launched on steam. Can anybody point out what I’m missing?

Nope, because it also looks like the same design to me.

That’s because there isn’t one, it’s the same model.
My guesses, either there was a mistake, or perhaps a worldmodel update which I’m too lazy to check.

Wow, It’s been a while since I logged on here… I blame browser shenanigans. Anyways, hi!
Some thoughts/observations about the update, but first off:

I haven’t had this happen to me. Is it possible that the security guard following you is alerting them to you? I can’t think of anything else that would cause this kind of difference.

Anyways, personal experiences so far. Single-player only, because I’m an antisocial nerd. :retard:

  • Holy shit, I don’t know what changed, but performance was absolutely shot throughout the entire game for me. While this computer is getting aged, I’m pretty sure it should be able to handle a constant 60FPS on BM. Instead, the framerate is all over the place, frequently dropping below 40.
ASUS GeForce GTX 670, 16GB of RAM (DDR3, I believe), with an Intel i5-3570k CPU (dual-core, hyper-threaded) at 3.40 GHz. For what it’s worth, creating an autoexec.cfg with these commands in it made a very noticeable increase in performance:

exec config.cfg //exec threading.cfg cl_showfps 1 cl_showpos 1 r_queued_decals 1 r_queued_post_processing 1 cl_threaded_client_leaf_system 1 cl_threaded_bone_setup 1- Whether this is because of the update itself, some of my settings, or the autoexec mentioned above, I have no idea, but I’ve also had BM crash all over the place for no discernible reason. Sometimes when changing levels, sometimes when loading a save file, sometimes when killing an enemy, sometimes when a grenade goes off… It’s all over the place. The one consistent crash I can remember is at the end of Questionable Ethics, in the tunnel just before Surface Tension - Unfortunately, I didn’t get the getpos co-ordinates for it, but looking at the right side of the tunnel at one point (around where the far stairs are, just past the military barricade office) consistently caused the game to crash.

Other than that, been having a pretty good time with the update so far. I forgot just how difficult Black Mesa gets :fffuuu:

Ending on a more positive note, so this post isn’t entirely critical.

  • While I didn’t notice anything about the RPG (I’m guessing it was just the worldmodel that changed), I absolutely love the new Crossbow and Shotgun models. To be honest, I’m kinda torn between the old shotgun and the new one, but these are both amazing-looking. Having said that, I’ve noticed a few things - for one thing, the shotgun’s world physics model doesn’t seem to be updated to the new model. Shotguns dropped by soldiers will clip through the floor or stand straight up, floating above the ground. The same seems to go for the Crossbow? I’ve seen it standing upright for no apparent reason a few times, at least. Also, while it’s relatively minor (and I’m not an expert and thus don’t know if this is something you actually can fix), there’s a bit of a “jump” in the Crossbow’s firing animation - After the player pulls the “bolt” back to load a new dart, instead of sliding up into place, the dart just appears in its final position (in comparison, the reload-from-empty animation has the first dart smoothly slide into position).

Great update.

But still no walking, broken. :frowning:
Also seems performance has been hit a bit. Anything can be done about that?

Blast Bit lighting hasn’t been fixed and the Vorts in one of the office complex levels still aren’t moving from their position.

We are seeing problems with lower end cards. Part might be drivers since nvidia/ati don’t really support old cards and part might be god rays etc. Anything over 30-40fps should be ok.

I must say the new crossfire map looks really beautiful, but it lags so much for me, it’s basically unplayable if too many players are online (using AMD Radeon R7 200).

30-40 FPS in Source games ok, lol ?

You need a bare minimum of 64 fps to get the full tickrate / updaterate of the game in multiplayer, and that’s assuming the game will not support 128 tickrate in the future in witch case an 128fps minimum would be ideal.

GTX 980, GTX970, GTX780 are not old cards.

30-40 FPS in Source engine is a laggy & stuttery mess, what Source engine games do you guys play that run smooth with that FPS ? in L4D2, CS:GO, HL2DM i usually don’t get less than 200fps…with no random fps drops, stutter, freezes or other problems whatsoever.

For the gtx670. That is what we have been seeing within the team. Mine runs fine at 4k 60fps with 980ti’s. We are addressing the performance issues after the holidays.
Its probably dlights or godrays.

Also question, has some sort of FXAA been added? because the edges look a bit blurrier.

Tried disabling godrays and dlights to see what happens. While there’s definitely a drop in performance with the godrays on, it’s relatively minor and the game as a whole is still performing noticeably worse than it did before. With dlights, I’m not seeing any noticeable change, and I was able to play with them enabled just fine before this update.

Showbudget comparison with and without godrays:

Also, with regards to that Questionable Ethics/Surface Tension crash - went to get a getpos of where it happened, only for it to not happen this time. I have no idea what changed between playthroughs, but for what it’s worth, here’s the data anyways.

159 fps on maps/bm_c2a4h.bsp pos: -227.01 -4532.00 -423.97 ang: -13.89 -166.40 0.00 vel: 0.00Looking towards the wall in this location caused the game to crash for some reason. I don’t know if I’ve got a crash dump around here or not…

Also you can hear the rail move twice for the crossbow when you fire because it still uses the old firing sound, or was that deliberate?

It seems for me in MP it renders everything no matter if its in my visible and rendered Visleaf or not.

how even
That’s leak territory.

There will be a several more passes made at optimization…things will be worked on just be patient. This is still a WIP.

Guys, you seem to forget it’s a product that is not done yet. There is a disclaimer on the store page that explicitly states that.

Optimization has always been an issue with BM even on its previous engine. The issues are being hammered out, have some patience.

And reports of issues are exactly what they need if they want to know what to fix.

2 words, constructive criticism.

I doubt anyone cares what that disclaimer says, you dont see us asking for money back, we’re just pointing out stuff that’s not working like it should, if we wouldn’t, we will be relying on faith & luck waiting for a fix, what if developers don’t spot a problem or other, or maybe underestimate it’s importance and delay its fix?

Who better to know what a game needs if not the people playing it.
