I think the problem here is there are atheists, who do not believe in any form of deity, and then there is a sub-group of atheists that belief science over religion, who are also the majority of atheists. There is no word for “people who reject religion and turn to science for explanation of the universe” so people turn to the word closest to that: atheists. You can’t really blame people for associating atheists with “people believing in science over religion” as that is the most common viewpoint of atheists and that viewpoint has no real name.

@KingKaddo if you have heard things about religion that we have not please share them with us. Also, please define “soul”.
“Soul” is an incredibly abstract word that can be taken to mean many many things. If you mean some part of your consciousness that remains after you die no such thing exists. And most people who believe in science over religion do not believe in any such thing as no evidence supporting such a claim has ever been found.
