The 8800GT of today!

Short and simple. My 8800GT died, i need a new card. Looking for “the best bang for buck” card, like the 8800GT was when it was realsed. I don’t really wanna spend much, say around £100.

My power supply isn’t great, so something that uses about the say power as the GT would be great. Power supply is around 500W i think. I can’t really remeber, been so long since i built this machine haha. Specs:

C2D E6750
2GB RAM
500W (?) PSU

Cheers!

5770

I 2nd this

just got this last month. fuckin awesome card. getting 170 fps on l4d.

At 1024x768.

What he said.

it was max everything, even the Res. i do have a widescreen monitor if that effects anything…

ummm, haven’t checked in a while, but last I know, the 9800 gt was the best bang for your buck. solid frame rate, plays virtually all games at good settings, doesn’t use too much power etc. and it’s only about 100 dollars or such. Go to https://www.newegg.com/ and check it out. The site is pretty easy to navigate, and if it’s not what you’re looking for, you should be able to find something that you want pretty easily.

The 5770 would be better than an 9800gt but a bit more expensive I think. The 9800gt isn’t significantly more powerful than an 8800 anyway.

These would be pretty good choices in my opinion-

Toms Hardware publishes a “Best Graphics Card for the Money” article every month. November is due out soon, read it and you’ll have your answer. I would say 6870, but that’s a bit more than you want to spend I think, so I’d have to support the 5770 right now for the price, since they’re only about 140 USD (87 GBP).

I was gunna suggest a 1Gb HD4850, but I picked mine up like 8 months ago, for 70 squids. So I guess you can go alot further these days, like everyone suggesting 5 series cards :fffuuu:

Everyone who suggested a 9800gt don’t know shit or just wanted to be funny. The 9800gt IS the 8800gt. Nvidia just renamed it. You can go with an amd hd 6850 or gtx460.

6850

The article Orphean referred to at Tom’s hardware is now up here. According to XE currency converter £100 is around $160USD however prices are higher here in the UK. The 4890 is around the same price as the 5770 (if you can find one!) but performs better.

I would recommend either the 4890, 5770 (if you want dx11) or GTX 460 768mb.

Cheers guys! Might go with the 5770 unless the vote can be swayed!

good choice. If you have a few more pounds laying around I would suggest you to buy the gtx460 768mb

I have a 4890 myself, and comparing with a friend who has a 5770, I can say that it does appear to perform significantly better than the newer counterpart, however the 5770 does have some new tech in it like Eyefinity (if you happen to have a bunch of monitors). But yeah, when I bought my 4890, oh, 6-12 months ago, it was already quite hard to find. I imagine now it would be next to impossible (except perhaps from craigslist or ebay).

Good choice mate. They are much cheaper now then they were 2 months ago. You might be able to afford 2 which has more power then 5870.

Edit: May I make a suggestion. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125327 Great card. I have one and soon will own two.

I’ve got the Radeon HD 5850 and it rocks…look for a card that supports DirectX 11

Worst idea ever.
