Subtitles

Hello,

I ran a search but I am not so sure if subtitles have been discussed for Black Mesa. I wanted to layout a few things regarding the purposes of subtitling.

I’m deaf (currently transitioning from HOH to deaf), and I can’t hear at all. My problem with Half Life 1 was its lack of subtitles. Half Life 2 had subtitles, for which I am so grateful for; but like I said, it’s in Half Life 1, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift that opposed any presence of subtitles.

I know there are not that many deaf people out there but it would be greatly appreciated if there’s a toggle option to turn on/off the subtitles option. The story is very critically important to us, and without it, we may never get to understand what Gordon Freeman was doing on that day and why he must uncover Xen and get rid of the otherworldly creatures from entering Earth. Yes, I had to read this from other sources to understand the story better. Talk about spoilers. :stuck_out_tongue:

I just hope you have figured out a way to put subtitles into the game, not for many of us deaf players but also for those who can’t hear very well or are having a hard time hearing.

I hope there’s a prompt response from one of the moderators on this forum, or from one of the development teammates that may include any tidbit about whether subtitles are added or not.

Thanks,

Huscurian

There will be English subtitles

That is great news, Starscream! Thank you, thank you!

Black Mesa definitely will be a mod developer in my books and helping players like me and others understand the story better, enjoy the game more is definitely looking brighter!

Subtitles aren’t just for deafs, but also for people who have problems with the English language

And yes, seems that there’ll be subtitles

i think it is more convenient with the subtitles on, just in case i miss something someone said in the game

I’d just like to ask if there will be a way to implement further subtitles (by others) for other languages?

Yes.

There were fan projects to implement subtitles for other languages, but I don’t know how they stand now. In the links above posted by Rukia has more details of such projects.

By the way, I was working on a project, which is adds subtitles to the original Half-Life, but there was some problems… so I just quit working on it. (I wasn’t have any programmers anyway.)

I always play with subtitles if they are available, i like that much more, then your sure not to miss something.

Agreed, subtitles are amazing

Indeed.

I normally play with subtitles on so that I don’t miss anything because of mumbling or ridiculous accents. (English is my secondary language btw)

I always play with subtitles on. I just don’t use the feature to subtitle actions. In other words, I don’t like “[door opens]” or “[health pickup]” or things like that. Just on for what people say.

I wonder if BM will feature an option for both as HL2 does.

I also use subtitles just because english is not my first language but I always play in english because this way I can improve and extend my vocabulary

Off topic: Why does “Quote message in reply” not work?

If by “Quote message in reply”, you mean that you click and it just turns gray, then what that does is tell the forum software that you’d like to “multi-quote”.

You can click the “Quote” button on multiple posts and then when you hit the “Reply” button on the final post, all the posts you clicked “Quote” on will appear in the reply box.

I would like to play the HL games with subtitles on but I don’t like the way they look in Source games. Too distracting I think.

All of the “[Combine Radio: Alert!]” and “[Headcrab Alert]” stuff is useful if they’re honestly too quiet to actually hear from certain distances. Saved me from falling for countless Poisoncrab ambushes.

Arguably abusing that kind of subtitling might be considered cheap though. :stuck_out_tongue:

I only use speech subtitles. Using closed captions for everything is annoying.

Closed captioning is especially helpful in Left 4 Dead.

Was going to say this^^
It gives you a huge heads up if there is a special infected around that’s too far away to hear, but close enough for closed captions to kick in.

I always play with subtitles on, just because I’m used to it after mainly playing console games in a (somewhat) busy house for so long. I don’t really need them when I’m playing PC games, but I use them anyway.

Fixed.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
