Strange heat issues

For some reason, when I start my pc, the start screen tells me that something is running too hot (I think the warning threshold is around 90°C).

However, once I’ve reached windows, both core temp and the mobo’s utility (ASUS AI Suite) tell me that both temperatures are fine (processor and MB).

Can this be a faulty sensor problem or can it really overheat while being started and then cool down significantly (I doubt it)?

Specs
i5 2500 (stock cooler)
msi gtx560 ti
8gb ddr3 ram

Maybe something in the computer heats up while not in use but the fan cools it down?

The only thing I’ve seen that can make a temp warning dialog appear is a GPU.

If you have windows 8 it could be a windows 8 bug.

Windows 7. And in bios it says the processor is at 85ish degrees Celsius. It doesn’t happen every time - I had to restart this morning for another reason and I didn’t get any warning.

Well, if the bios is reporting the high temp there is definitely an issue somewhere, if the ports on the back of the mobo are getting hot that means it’s not a faulty sensor and your cooler is not properly touching the cpu…

if your CPU is running cool and reporting the wrong temps you may run into the issue of slowdowns due to thermal control (cpu throttling)

This is why I think there’s a faulty sensor somewhere:

The red arrow indicates the only strange temp (also shows up in speedfan) and fluctuates from 65 to 87 in a second.

EDIT: Also, I just did a stress test and that number goes down to 40ish °C while the PC is on full load.

Core and package temps get to 70ish -which is a bit high, admittedly; keep in mind it’s just the shitty stock cooler- but they don’t go past that or get close to the 80-90 degree temperature that the other sensor is reporting.

Um… 90C? Yeah, good luck cooling off your computer. Or at least the pile of smoldering slag that was your computer.

Did you even read what he said? It’s not actually a problem, his computer just thinks it is.

Do you have the ability to read previous posts?

EDIT: damn ninja

I wasn’t serious. I think you misunderstood my tone.

I’ll just say, yes, it probably is a faulty sensor.

I don’t know that anyone understood your tone. This is text, remember?

luckily it’s not a CPU sensor (as reported by CoreTemp) so you won’t run into the issue of throttling when it thinks it’s overheating

Bought and installed a new cooler (Cooler Master Hyper 212+). Now the cores idle at 35ish and dont even get to 50 on full load. CPUTIN and AUXTIN sensors still show the 90ish temps.

Faulty sensors confirmed. Thanks for your help, guys (especially Sersoft).
