Stop the Internet Blacklist. Sign the petition.

Australia tried to do this a while back… If you folks in America Land get it through it will be that much easier to bring it up in parliament again over here.

I hope that everyone realizes sites such as Youtube would be blacklisted. I mean, it’s full of “Pirated” songs, right?
It doesn’t matter if Fair Use laws allow it, if it contains ANY copyrighted material, Youtube is going down- Just like WMG has been doing to the videos on it for years.
Not to mention any Blog critical of the Government, and god knows what else.

This is bad news, guys. I just want those of you who don’t see that to understand the gravity of the situation. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and power over what can be seen on the internet is absolute power over it.

So, how exactly are they going to “shut down” offending websites? That’s pretty critical to the quality of the bill.

Pelosi shows up naked at the offenders house and refuses to leave until the server is down.

Exactly. They don’t shut down the site, they just block us from seeing it. That’s the problem I have with this law.

Yeah, that’s pretty bad. They should fine or arrest the owner of the site and/or have the owner shut it down. Alternatively they could have the owner of the server take it down. That’s the only way I can think of for this to be acceptable.

This isn’t anything to be worried about.

Worst case scenario is /b/ DDoSes the government servers x10 harder than the government servers DDoS any other site, and the government abandons it for being too costly.

Censoring the internet is one of the most pointless things anyone could attempt.

I already posted a direct quote from the bill that proves this wrong. It has to be shown that the main purpose of the website is the distribution of pirated material to get it shut down. Don’t give me that crap about not seeing the “gravity” of the situation, please.

Wait, is there a reliable source that even verifies that all of this could possibly happen?

NOOOO! ‘Mericans don’ tuch mah Pirate Bay!

The Bill only allows the American Government to censor sites located in the USA, while The Pirate Bay servers used to be located in Sweden, but is now located somewhere else.
The reason I am being so unspecific about their current location is because nobody knows.
They could be anywhere!

They could even be right behind you…

OR, we could just say fuck you and stop succumbing.

What are you even talking about? I don’t watch the news.

Corruption can spread anywhere in any way shape or form that I can think of. Just depends on the people you are surrounding yourself with. For all we know Obama probably hasn’t even given his birth papers. Trust him? No I don’t.

-DP-

We can tell.

His birth papers? See, that’s exactly the blind ignorance and fear he was talking about. The president doesn’t have time to address every ridiculous (and clearly xenophobic) accusation thrown at him by wingnuts, especially ones that are continually thrown out by the courts.

And again, that you’re dragging Obama into this makes no sense. The president doesn’t pass laws, he can only veto them or sign them into law. This issue only has to do with congress. Even if Obama were the most corrupt person in the world, it would have no bearing on this bill whatsoever.

So many things wrong here, where to start…

YouTube seems like such a bad example for this. While yes it has some pirated material on it, it makes a pretty good effort to keep this content off. I’ve had more and more trouble finding such content on YouTube over time. Also, the owners of YouTube are not actually supporting piracy. I doubt something as big as YouTube is going to be easily shut down when it’s doing it’s best to remove pirated material and clearly does not support pirated material.

How could they take down Blogs critical of the government? Unless they slip that in somewhere in the bound to be overly long bill, the ACTUAL bill does not give them that power. It is clearly written that it is targeting copyright infringement and piracy. Blogs critical to the government break no laws or constitutional rights even remotely related to copyright or piracy law.

Finally, the US government does not have absolute power, that quote is totally out of context. There are 100 senators, 435 representatives, 1 president, and 9 supreme court justices to go through. That’s 545 people viewing this bill, 535 of which have some control over the content of it. That’s not even close to absolute power.

Besides the fact that Youtube is owned by Google, and I’m not sure but I think even the US government wouldn’t want to mess with such a beast.

So here’s something I don’t think anyone has asked yet:

If the bill will only effect american-based websites, and it only effects sites that are infringing copyright laws and similar, why the hell does this law need to pass? Copyright laws already exist, else I wouldn’t be talking about them.

It just sounds to me like a pointless law because it already exists, just not directly regarding the internet. If there is enough evidence to envoke this new law then there’s surely already enough to take the website down and prosecute the owners the old fashioned way?!

pretty good point

succumbing to what?

He doesn’t have the capacity to explain what. He doesn’t know what is going on.

you are a gigantic asshole. you are bad, and you should feel bad.
