Stop the Internet Blacklist. Sign the petition.

I’m just saying, if you don’t want to see images from a certain site add it to your adblock plus.

Signed 50 more times, damn tired of making valid fake emails.

Censoring free speech (Ie, the internet) is Facist, plain and simple. No real Communist or Socialist government would do that.
Of course, if there’s money to be made censoring the internet, US Congress will be all over it like Bobby Kotick on a pile of money.

It just won’t happen.

Everyone knows that nothing should be censored, especially not on the internet. They really can’t stop anyone from making porn and putting it on every website until there are no non-pornographic websites in existence.

This isn’t about censorship. Stop pretending that it is.

Shutting down a website that distributes illegal copies of games, movies, software or music is not restricting anyone’s free speech. Why do I even have to point this out? If a shop that sold bootlegged DVDs was shut down no one would be crying censorship. How does the fact that their illegal distribution methods just so happen to be digital make any difference?

This wouldn’t be a bad thing if I knew it couldn’t be misused. If they go after pirate sites and sites like 4chan then fine, but they’re more than likely going to go outside of those boundaries and go for sites that they believe are “radical”; just like they try and claim the Tea Parties are “radical.”

Just saying.

This IS about censorship. Tell me, what’s to stop them from censoring any other site they happen to disagree with? Nothing. If this bill is passed, I can almost guarantee you that it won’t stop at sites distributing pirated material, it will spread to any other site they don’t want you to see.

Dammit, the internet has always been a free, lawless expanse of wilderness. You can’t tame OR control it.
If America decides to roll the tanks through it, people are going to get very angry, very quickly.

Oh Jesus H. Christ. Do you have the remotest clue how the U.S. government works? What’s to stop them from censoring other things you ask? HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT OTHER THINGS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE “CENSORED” IN THE BILL. If they wanted to stop other sites, they would have to pass a separate bill to give them that power, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s EXCELLENT record on free speech would stop that almost instantly. If you would like to point out the current bill on the floor that actually grants the government power to censor the internet, I will sign a petition against it right now. But that is not what this particular law is.

This is a very limited and specific bill. It grants the government no power to stop anything aside from sites that are shown in a court of law to be distributing illegal copyrighted material. That is it.

Also, please remember that America does not run on one mind. Not everyone here believes in every bill that is suggested.

Just thought I’d put that out there so people will vent their anger towards those particular people and not America as a whole. :stuck_out_tongue:

The problem with this law, in my opinion, is that “Censorship” is the completely wrong word for them to be using. The use of this word does two obvious things:

  1. It brings Free Speech into the argument and
  2. It immediately implies the VIEWERS are at fault

Neither of these appear to be entirely valid for what the law is claiming to do. They aren’t taking down sites that attack government or spread views they disagree with, they are attacking sites that are spreading illegal content. The distribution of illegal objects is not protected under the constitution last time I checked.

Then, trying to imply the viewers are at fault is aiming the blame at the wrong people. If the government wants to attack illegal content, they should be targeting the owners of the sites not the individual viewers.

I’m not necessarily trying to defend this law and claim it should be passed, but seems to me like it’s a poorly worded law that isn’t doing what everyone is freaking out that it’s going to do.

Seriously, you people are bigots. You all keep mentioning it and saying it’d be fine to shut this site down, when all it is is an imageboard but you’re fine with shutting it down just because you don’t like it.

And don’t say it breaks the law because of the CP posted there because a recent child pronography ring was uncovered on facebook but you don’t see anyone going crazy about that.

You’re joking right? Have you seen all the legal video game restrictions? Or a list of all the banned books in the USA?

My first double post!

I understand your concern, but you’ve gotta understand that when a bill is passed the government is only allowed to enforce the precise text of said bill – and that’s only assuming the bill isn’t challenged as being unconstitutional. Crossing the boundaries isn’t an option here. If any agency goes beyond the purview of the bill it could be easily challenged in court, and the ACLU would be all over it. There’s no threat of a slippery slope.

And not to get into semantics too much, but the term “radical” applies to leftist ideologies. The Tea Party is a reactionary group. :stuck_out_tongue:

You mean the video game restrictions that were found to be unconstitutional by state courts? The government doesn’t restrict video game sales. It’s a hot button legislative issue, but every time it’s gone before the courts the censorship side has been totally shut down.

Where’s this magical list of banned books you just made up? It doesn’t exist. You know why? Because the SUPREME COURT has overturned all book banning legislation that has come before it. Nice try, but you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The only restrictions compared to other mediums is the mandatory rating. Other than that most of the “restrictions” are from the retailers not the government. Such as that minors can’t buy M rated games without parent consent. That’s just a common policy amongst retailers. Games can put whatever the hell they want in them. It just must be rated. Granted an A rating will kill a game because retailers won’t carry it but that has nothing to do with government. There have been numerous attempts to regulate games further but almost all of them have failed.

I don’t post much on these forums, but I do read them a lot and I just wanted to say thank you to gibbelin for knowing what he’s talking about and taking the time to try to show others. Too many people (especially us Americans if you ask me) don’t do the research before they form their opinions; worse, they don’t even know how things work or at the very least the history that may support/not support certain conjecture. I take legislature very seriously and have no sympathy for those that try to push an issue without an understanding of it (which, unfortunately, is most politicians). /rant

Sorry for that, carry on.

America is fucking shit.

This also seems unconstitutional, fuckers are just going to tighten the screws till we’re practically in concentration camps.

The thing about this rule that I don’t like is the approach they are taking to solving the problem. I fine and all with shutting down illegal websites, but that’s not what they are doing. They are not disabling the site, they are blocking people from it. So they aren’t attacking the site, they are attacking the people. Idk I’m just thinking out loud here. I guess I’m gonna go with DinoThrasher here, censor is the wrong word.

Yeah, what ever happened to “Expressing ourselves”.

Damn Obugger.

Blind fear, ignorance, exaggeration, shall I go on with what else is wrong with this statement?

Seriously, has the media trained you so hard as to freak out about things you don’t understand that you do it without thought. Come on! regulation of Internet websites turning into concentration camps? You sound like a ten year old regurgitating the beliefs and fears of his ignorant mommy and daddy.

Seriously this statement is exactly whats wrong with how people interpret news.

Edit: Also I find it amusing how you jump to blame Obama despite this piece of legislation coming from congress.
