Steam Summer Sale Is On

Unreal did have some really big, open maps, though. I’d maybe put it on par with the Bioshock series in terms of that.

Tomb Raider is currently 75% off, I’d recommend buying that. It has free-roam for people like TheeGoatPig.

Unreal 1 was honestly almost like a survival horror version of Quake. It’s very good. I suddenly want to reinstall it now and try to finish it…

Epic could regain a lot of PC cred if they went and remade Unreal 1 on UE4 and kept it PC exclusive.

Unreal 1 is one of my absolute favorite games. I loved the scale and alien atmosphere, the sense of loneliness, and how the AI actually put up quite a fight. I also loved how they had tons of little side stories and lore in those translator messages, though a lot of people seemed to criticize that back when it came out.

And of course, the music is my favorite part.

I’d just hope the current epic team wouldn’t choose to desaturate everything and take out the explanation if they were to remake it.

Survival horror? Only if the horror in question was how the NPCs dodge almost everything you can throw at them.

I really would love a new/remade Unreal, though. The only thing I wonder about it is how they’d translate the environments… Vegetation was pretty sparse in that game. Either they’d be mostly rock/sand/dirt, and seem very dead and lifeless, or they’d have to add a lot more foliage, making it less like the original in the process.

I think adding more vegetation in this case would be pretty ok, given you couldn’t have much in the way of vegetation in 98, and the game was already a system killer at the time. Still keeping the architecture of the Skaarj warships and the nali castles similar would go a long way towards making the game pretty similar anyway.

I would be willing to bet most of those landscapes early on in the game would be grass covered.

Okay, so it isn’t scary in the traditional sense. I did find it very unnerving how I could suddenly be attacked at any moment because the AI could navigate the entire map to track me down. Health kits are also fairly sparse, leading to the “survival” moniker.

Also the beginning level on the ship, and the isv-kran were pretty scary at times, especially the later with how the enemies kept coming out of the vents and chasing you and this was playing

I remember there was some holy shit moments when I found out skaarj could fake their death when you shot them enough, wait for you to leave, then get up and start chasing you again.

I didn’t even know about that till like, my third playthrough. I assumed before that I had just missed a guy or something whenever I ran into enemies in areas I already cleared.

I might finally buy Skyrim, but I’m concerned for my grades.
And the ability to sleep.

The music is what makes Unreal a great game. I only got it a few years ago, which is to say that I had no emotional attachments to the game to bias my present-day opinion, and I was immediately immersed in the atmosphere of the game, and it was the unbelievable soundtrack that did it for me.

Anyways, to get back to the topic, I picked up “Don’t Starve!” the other day, and wow is that fun. I wasn’t sure I’d get much play value out of it cause most survival games I’ve played teetered either to the difficult and frustrating side, or the simple and eventually monotonous side, but Don’t Starve seems to strike a perfect balance that is simple to get the hang of but always throwing you surprises that keep you on your feet. I would definitely recommend this game. It’s also nice cause you can play with just the mouse if you want to. Solitaire is no longer my lunchtime game.

Thinking about buying the F.E.A.R collection. Are those games any good?

FEAR and its expansions are really good. FEAR 2 is good as well but not as good as the original. FEAR 3 is apparently an abomination.

Oh, yeah. I had a vaguely memory about that, it’s why I asked. I wasn’t sure if I confused it with another game series or not. Ended up buying it.

I got The Organ Trail for $1.21… Selling trading cards has paid off

bought Walko Dead and Natty Slect 2.

FEAR 1 was great, and extraction point was pretty good, but perseus mandate was pretty horrendous.

FEAR 2 was good too but was really lacking a lot from the first game, and the effects were worse for some stupid reason

I never understood why people hate Perseus Mandate. The gameplay is pretty much identical. The level design might be a bit worse but I never really picked up on that kind of thing while playing. The story could have also been better but that doesn’t affect the gameplay.

I reinstalled Fear the other month with the intent to actually play it a second time, but I haven’t. I can’t seem to care about it right now.
