Steam is currently unavailable, please try again later

That is the message I was greeted with earlier when I tried to start(which started the automatic update) Steam.

I have renamed the clientregistry.blob, tried updating it in safe mode, running it as an administrator and I have removed every trace of Steam from my computer and reinstalling to no avail(it now gives Win32 Error 5 :frowning: ).
I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue, and if so, did you fix it and how?

I am on Windows Vista SP2 32-Bit, if that’s any help.

EDIT:
I appear to have fixed it, renaming the clientregistry.blob, running in safe mode with networking and running steam.exe as administrator seems to have allowed Steam to update itself(although I tried this earlier and it didn’t like it…), ignore this thread unless you are having a similar issue. \o/

Oh, i have the problem too when my pc was hitted by virus, not it is done too.

a +1 post, sorry.

I had the problem yesterday.
It kinda fixed itself for me - after a Steam restart it applied the update successfully.

Running WinXPSP3 on the netbawk.

I have this too. can someone tell me a way around it in simple english, I know very little about technology or computers?

thank you.

Yes, it’s annoying, i can’t launch steam.

BTW renaming clientregistry.blob doesn’t always work, permanently deleting it is the best solution.

Yes, I have this problem. What’s the best solution? I renamed that blob thing but it didn’t work.

Edit: Nevermind it’s working again, what was that update?

Anytime something goes goofy in steam, I delete all .blob files and it takes care of itself.

I’m starting to believe that those .blob files are an inside joke of Valve employees.

They probably refer to Gabe as ā€œthe Blobā€ when they say ā€œIf a Valve product fails, blame the blob.ā€.

ā€œIf steam fails, blame the Blob.ā€

lol.

PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a batch file that deletes every *.blob file in C:/Games/Steam

but… there is only two of them. why make a batch file for that?

cuz im lazy

I also have a batch file that automatically closes steam.exe, msnmsgr.exe and explorer.exe when I open gta IV, and as soon as I exit, reopens them. This makes 2gb almost enough to run it on high detail.

please can someone help! can you explain how to get rid of this please?

Check your internet settings.

in internet explorer internet options check/uncheck the ā€œdetect settingsā€ checkbox and try again

sorry, can’t find it, where in internet options is it?

connections -> lan settings

ok thanks very much  .

Edit: no, didn’t work, thanks anyway :frowning: . anyone else?

Mine was messed up too, didn’t take any notice, and it’s fine today.

reinstall steam

your only other option is to wait and try again later
