Guys, you’re all assuming that BMS will be released this year.
to us it will. to you…mmm - not sure.
It held up, as far as I know, with the release of Portal 2, so…
There is quite a difference between Portal 2 and BMS… We’ve got hype levels reaching “Duke Nukem Forever without knowing that it actually sucks!” which Portal 2 did not have time to build up to from announcement to release. If anything can bring the steam network to it’s knees it’s the release of BMS on steam… All those people trying to download the same thing at once…
This is great! I’m pretty sure the game will have to drop the Source if it hasn’t already. I believe Valve requested that.
Anyways, what a wonderful new thing to come out durring the development of this game.
facepalm
Perhaps that’s exactly why he didn’t have it on Steam? There would be a delay between updates and when an update caused a major problem (Right clicking sheep crashed the game for a single update) it would take longer to fix. Besides, can you really blame him for wanting to be in total control of the profits the game gets? He’s an indie developer.
You can also add it to Steam yourself. There is an option somewhat along the lines as “Add Mod”.
Be strange if directly after BM released on Greenlight Valve announced HL3…and stated that they were waiting from BM to finish before they were gonna release it…
It’d also be strange if my house lifted off the ground and flew away
Depends. You live in a place with tornadoes? Rogue resonance cascades popping up stealing your landz? Would be normal then.
This is gonna sound crazy, but I considered that possibility. (Me being a developer has nothing to do with this theory)
Valve released Episode 2 in a box with HL2 and Ep1, because the story for both of those is highly relevant, and you’d really be thrown into a mess if you played Episode 2 as your first Half-Life game.
With Episode 3 coming out, theoretically it might wrap up the Half-Life series entirely. If they want to do that, good writers tend to use “bookends”, tying the beginning of the series with the ending.
Now, like with the Orange Box, they have to assume they’ve gained a large audience now, 80% of which have never played through Half-Life 1. They can’t really just demand these people pay $10 for a super-old game with outdated FPS mechanics. However, having a free, modern recreation of their first game available might be a very good way of reminding / newly-introducing any plot elements unique to the first game, in order to bring them to a conclusion in Episode 3.
Plus, they know they have all sorts of awesome and interesting games and properties they own now - they have no incentive to hurry themselves up with their next Half-Life game if they want to do it a certain way.
If they wanted an updated version of HL to “bookend” HL 3, I suspect that they would make that game themselves, or rather outsource it such that they had some oversight and control of the project.
And wouldn’t that be a bitch - to put all this time and effort into Black Mesa, and then to see Valve release an updated HL bundled with HL 3? That wouldn’t be the optimum situation for the BM project insofar as the game being overshadowed by the Valve game and the inevitable comparison.
I doubt that will happen - it makes no sense in general for a studio to remake it’s own games like that. It’s expensive, and I imagine Valve would rather utilize it’s resources for new concepts. And if it would be that such an updated game would produce a profit, I suspect that they would outsource the project and maintain oversight and control of the game - if they really thought that was necessary.
they did that and it was crap, it was half life source. what katana said makes perfect sense though. it gives a massive boost back to the community and valve gets a free ride with it.
what would truly be interesting is if they boxed it like the orange box and released it as a bonus.
Half-Life Source was not a Half-Life remake, it was a GoldSrc port
I think that Valve is waiting for Black Mesa to finish and release so that they can snatch it up and include it in the upcoming Schrödinger’s Boxset with Half-Life 1, Half-Life 2 and episodes 1-3, Half-Life 3, Portal 1, and Portal 2.
Devs, you heard me. You’re holding up Episode 3 and Half-Life 3. Get cracking!
Do you think Valve would assume that they will buy a 3rd party amateur mod that they haven’t yet played, or allow that unplayed mod to influence or hold up the release of their own games?
It’s obvious that the possibility exists that Valve could like the mod and buy it to bundle with HL 3. But there’s no way in Hell that Valve would delay the release of one of it’s games to wait for the release of an 3rd party amateur mod that they’ve never played.
Apart from the fact that Valve only licenses Source to modders on a no profit basis, I don’t think Valve would be so bold as to snatch up Black Mesa and sell it in any of their own bundles. It’s practically feeding off others hard work.
Naturally they could - from their own incentive - give some of the profit to the dev team, but that would again be too unfair against any other modding team with super good mods.
But I like the idea of Valve putting up BM as a Steam Download with free advertising in the system, then waiting for about 4 weeks and then - surprise the sequel to the sequel.
explained in layman’s terms.
its valve. they’ll delay it because of Gabe Newell getting tickled by elmo.
HL Source was really just an experiment to show modders how quick and easy it was to port GoldSrc stuff into the new engine. It was never supposed to be a proper full remake, at most it’s just a remastering of the game.
There wouldn’t be any uproar over HLS if they had done the honorable thing and not charged money for it as if it were a AAA title. That was their big mistake there.
Zen, you’re misinterpreting what Katana said.
His theory is that Valve will “bookend” the series by tying Half-Life 3 itself (or Ep3, w/e) in to the original, and use BM as an added bonus to the hype, because it would fit with the theme or some plot elements in HL3.
“However, having a free, modern recreation of their first game available might be a very good way of reminding / newly-introducing any plot elements unique to the first game, in order to bring them to a conclusion in Episode 3.”
plus Black Mesa will be better than HL2 story, quality and graphics wise.
