@OP: Since account name is one of the ways people can add you through Steam, it’s fairly safe. Not much you can do with just an account name, other than try to guess the password.
But even with the advent of SteamGuard, I would keep your password safer than 24k gold bullion. Even though the boys over at Steam Hacks don’t seem to be able to come out with anything more powerful than “hurr durr I m4de brut3 f0rce|2 w1th p//d l15t, y0u g3t b4z1ll10n acc0untz in le1k, 4 d4yz!!!11111!!!11 I 4m 1337 haker!!!11111!!! lololololololol stup1d n00bz dun no h0w k33p pwd s4f3!111!!!11!!!1 n0w g1mm3 r3p!!!11!!!” so probably can’t get through SG, I wouldn’t take that un-necessary risk. Change your password regularly (unless you have an impossible to guess one like yours truly) and keep your AV software up to date to try and catch out any potential key logging software.

Wait, where the hell is Catz? Why am I doing this and not her? She’s usually the one to pounce on topics like this. Two pages and no Catz. I am disappoint.

EDIT: That said, no need to go giving your account name out willy nilly either.

Profile name or actual account name? If you know someone’s profile name, is their account name easy to obtain anyway, especially if you’re in their friend list?

IDK, I don’t throw mine out there - but then again, I’m anti-social as hell…

I don’t think you can see someone’s account name, even if you’re on their friends list.
