Square-Enix's Luminous Engine tech demo

That shit is running on real time on a very powerful PC using hardware you can buy right now.

You can see that it is real-time in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9xhFpuIMX4

Real-time graphics basically indistinguishable from reality are a lot closer than we thought.

Looks good.

Visually looks stunning - just wish they’d spent a little bit more effort on the animations - sometimes looked really stiff and robotic.

EDIT: But I suppose animations weren’t really the point, were they?

fuck yeah! shaky cam!

Yeah, that was really dumb. “Hey, let’s show our super-detailed real time engine stuff in shaky cam so no one can see this huge amount of graphical detail properly! We are such genius!”

That looked incredible. Maybe I"ll finally bother playing an FF game.

If they made an FF game with that modern-day feel it could really shake up series formula. They’d be one step closer to Xenogears.

Fuck that, they should remake Xenogears on that engine. With the full plot this time.

I always love it when they make really crappy demos of amazing technology. See also: Unreal 4 demo.

Anyway, this looks great, but if they want games to look anywhere near that, Sony and Microsoft had better pull their heads out of their asses.

Shit. I wonder if square will actually make a game on PC using this engine

Human Revolution sequel. GO.

Why are they showing us real life footage?

It’s cool, but the animations are a bit stiff.

Square Enix does fuck all other than make shitty anime-inspired games. Normal people call those animations stiff, animefags call them super advanced and realistic.

With this and Watch Dogs, I feel like aliens just sold video-game steroids to Earth.

Honestly we’re just seeing the graphics we could’ve slowly moved into today if the industry wasn’t using the current generation of console hardware as the standard for engine development.

Most of the games that I have been seeing recently with such fine graphics have all been realistic and of similar styles. It would be interesting to see how one would implement a game of more artistic design into the realm of such graphics. For instance, it would be interesting to see how a game like Psychonauts or Warcraft would make use of such potential.

Half the charm of Psychonauts was made up of the bold art style it had, so realistic style would just not work for it.

As for Warcraft, it would just make it look generic.

Psychonauts with high poly models and nicer shaders and bigger textures and identical designs would be pretty damn awesome though.

particles seem to be in now. Also, I sense a new generation of consoles is coming.

About fucking time.
