source sdk free means all can play black mesa?

Maybe it isn’t that important, but users can be confused by that wrong information! And as Triver already said, it would only require a few minutes to update that page!

I’ve nothing against supporting Valve by purchasing any of their great games, but not by giving users wrong information!
In the end it was Valve’s own decision to make the Source SDK free to anyone, which makes it legal and possible to play mods without a purchased Source game.

do you mean the page in the wiki which can be edited by the community?

Thou shalt not give shits about a free Source SDK when one owns thy Orange Cube.

He was probably specifically referring to the main page.

I don’t see the problem. Just buy HL2. It’s an awesome game (except those massive boring vehicle bits).

Why would anyone interested in this mod not have played HL2, is the question I’m asking.

Exactly.

By the way my English isn’t very well, why I should leave writing wiki entries to someone else.

I already have bought HL2. But this doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that the system requirements page should provide correct information!

As I alreay said, this is not a question of why would anyone be interested in this mod, it is a matter of having correct information on the system requirements page!

Hubicorn probaly has too much on his hands with preparing the new site to edit the front page.
Or is he already done with the new site?

i know i am

I don’t see how that statement is incorrect.

You can go make a blank account and there you go a copy of a source engine game (TF2) on Steam.

I’ve played every HL game, and I would still be interested in this mod even if I hadn’t played HL2, really if you play any HL game, even the expansions, I don’t see why this mod wouldn’t be interesting.

I tried to edit the information on the wiki, but I need a user account and sadly didn’t find a way to create one. So it would be great if a user who already has an account for editing wiki entries could take a few minutes to finally correct the wrong information on the system requirements page…

ok i updated it. I think I got the info right, not too savy on all the technicalities, but it should be good now.

Thank you!

And Alien Swarm as well.

Sry for bumping this up but in my opinion there are still open questions that need to be clarified!

  1. Does Black Mesa really work by only having Source SDK Base 2007 (+ 2006) installed?

  2. Will you be able to set up the Source SDK/Hammer editor to create custom maps for Black Mesa, if you only have a blank account without any purchased game (in this case the SDK only lets you choose the engine branch “Source Engine MP” with “Team Fortress 2”) or if you only have purchased a game like Portal 2 or L4D (because they don’t give you acccess to anything in the default sdk, but come with their own authoring tools).

A Black Mesa developer should create a blank account and test these cases to provide for all contingencies.

I don’t see why it’s up to the developers to do these things. If you want to play Black Mesa, just buy a source game. I don’t see how you’d even have heard of BM without owning any Valve titles.

Maybe I already got a few Source games, but just wanna know the ‘exact’ system requirements?

Maybe I want to play with a friend in multi player who doesn’t wanna buy a source game (if not necessary)?

Maybe I am just interested in playing a great mod, but don’t wanna buy a game I am not interested in just for being able to play the mod (if not necessary)?

And it is usual that a developer provides the correct system requirements for his own product.

or…

Would a pirate ask for a legal way for playing a mod for free, if you could just load an illegal version of a game, which offers mod support or a modified version of the mod later?

By the way: I don’t think I need to justify myself, just because I want information about the exact requirements.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
