Source SDK 2013 Released

Valve has relreased the 2013 build of the Source SDK. It includes support for OS X, Linux, Oculus Rift, and Steam Pipe.

It looks like Valve is changing the way mods are created from here on it. instead, you’ll have to use a Source game’s authoring tools instead of creating a mod through the SDK app, which will be removed from everyone’s tools library soon. Look’s like the Black Mesa devs may have some work to do. I hope Steam Pipe doesn’t break the mod.

Time to remake Black Mesa in this version of Source  .

Hopefully Source 2 is on the way even if HL3 isn’t.

Is it a source code release, or just the tools?

EDIT: OMG IT IS IT IS BRB JIZZING ON MONITOR

That’s right, the full thing! No more orange box mods anymore! Yay!

EDIT: For anyone who may be confused by this, no it doesn’t mean BM is automagically ported to Mac/Linux/Source 2013. However it is AWESOME for mod development!

Quick, everyone look through the entire code for clues to HL3!

People were asking Joe Ludwig to add VR support to the Source SDK 2007 and he delivered something better than expected.
I guess it’s just the updated Source 2009 branch, without features from ASW, Portal 2, Dota2 or CS:GO.

Some people have already tested Black Mesa in (hacked) VR months ago. It’s not as nice as native support, but apparently it’s good enough to enjoy:

Nathan Andrews, author of HL2VR mod:

Ralf Ostertag, author of commercial VR driver:

So, maybe after all those years of waiting to see Xen, we will actually go there instead?

Haha maybe. Hopefully the transition to source 2013 will be easier than the transition from source 2006 to 2007, so we can see these changes in BM.

I lol’d more than I should have

The worst part is someone’s actually gonna find something.

the community does crazy things and so does valve (which is why they find it better to keep their things secret)

but valve releasing their sourcecode is unheard of (the only reason the community got a source code to begin with was due to those leaks)

and i didnt think they would fix up the SDK after all these years of having to put up with 3rd party tools

It would be fantastic to play Black Mesa on Linux, its the only missing piece of Half-Life remaining.

Well, apparently they’re also phasing out the existing SDK launcher, and to build the 2013 codebase you need Visual Studio 2010.

I have VS2005. FUCK.

I would be happier if they actually changed their tools…
But this will fill the void I guess :/.

It would be fantastic if the engine bugs could be fixed for Orange Box mods, like Black Mesa…

Porting from 2007->2013 it’s a programmer work and I guess that it’s harder than it seems.

Porting to 2k9 would definitely be something I’d be personally willing to do when I have time to spare but it isn’t in our official plans.

So if I’m reading this correctly, we will have Linux and OSX support soon?

[COLOR=‘Green’]Merged two threads on exactly the same topic.

The SDK will. Black Mesa is very unlikely to port, however. (see dev post above)

Bugger, the new Single Player SDK is 7+ GB. I’ll have to swipe some bandwidth at the coffee shop once I’ve cleaned out some space on my hard drive.

So it changes nothing for us. If BM devs will bother to port it to mac and linux, good then for those who own one. The majority owns windows anyway, for gaming at least.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
