Ack, don’t get my hopes up posting this in the tech & games forum. I thought there might’ve been an official announcement or something.

Yeah, me too… Ah well.

What official announcement? Source 2 was officially announced long ago.

i sure hope we dont have to pay for the source 2 editions of our existing source games

and i hope we can still roll back over to source 1 (maybe source 1 will act like DirectX8/9 mode for low end pc’s???)

It doesn’t work like that. Porting over the old games to the new engine will quite possibly be a lot of work. Even if they do make source 2 ports (which is unlikely given the fiasco that was HLS) you’ll probably have to pay for them.

Not necessarily, considering Source and Source 2 are both Valve engines, I wouldn’t be surprised if they designed Source 2 with portability in mind. Remember that one of the largest focuses of Source 2 is on content creation, so it stands to reason that they would want all of their huge modding community to be able to take advantage of their new streamlined modding tools.

Well, considering what the modding community for Valve games is HUGE, the quality of the mods are increasing AND Valve are increasing community interaction on ALL fronts, there is absolutely no doubt that they are developing Source 2 with easy modding in mind, maybe even as a main focus. Very likely they are making something new to revulotionaise video game industry again - HL did this with story telling, HL2 - physics and Gravity gun… Who knows what they are cooking up now…

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
