Some slow-paced FPS?

So I’m tired of games that are so fast that you can’t even take a look at the enviroment. Also I hate killing bunch of enemies at the same time, comming in hordes and in a restless way, because I can’t even see what I’m fighting. Also it gives me the nerves, and that’s not something I want in a video game. So I just don’t play games like COD or Battlefield(People say it’s slowpaced but actually I find it the same shit as COD). So, could you recommend me some FPS that are more like Half Life? I mean, fighting less enemies, but harder. And with a good story and enviroment. Also I don’t want something futuristic.

Crysis lets you fool around a ton with the environment. It gets pretty fun actually. Clear out all the enemies from the area and you’re free to explore and interact with stuff if you feel like it. Or you can combine the best of both worlds and use the environment to mess with the enemy. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not quite Half-Life though, and it’s slightly futuristic (give or take ~20 years in terms of military hardware, but not counting the main characters’ suits which are ridiculous). The story is okayish until about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the game, at which point it starts getting meh.

Cryostasis, I guess. It’s not like Half-Life but it’s definitely slow-paced with an interesting setting and story.

Also, you might look into Raven games. Wolfenstein, Singularity, etc. There are some larger set pieces, but nothing like the chaos of a COD or a Killzone.

I don’t know if this entirely fits your criteria:

It’s slow paced in the sense that there aren’t as many enemies to deal with, but is arguably more nerve wracking because of it. Combat is highly lethal- one shot will kill you or the enemy, and stealth and surprise are much more important than getting lead downrange. The meat of the game is in the planning phase, where you can micromanage up to four seperate fireteams to complete each scenario’s objectives, each with their own waypoints and sets of actions. Most of the game is in the planning phase, the action is usually decided in a few minutes, win or lose.

ARMA if you’re really at it
1-3 shots are probably gonna drop anyone dead,
You won’t go rushing close with a shotgun in this game, see that enemy 100m away? Keep your heads down and find some cover
The encounters are usually small and scattered around the map, other than some nice big battles

There’s so many things in this game that is overly realistic it may not be for casuals, but if you can deal with it then it’s a whole lot of fun

Well, those are good answers. I’ve already played ARMA a lot, I really like it but the story isn’t very good, and it’s extremely complex. Crysis’s requirements are too high-end for my computer, I could run it but it would either look like Minecraft or like a slideshow, so no. I guess I’ll try Rainbow Six, Cryostasis also looks good.

Any other games?

Hmm, maybe the first Unreal. Sure, it can be pretty difficult at times but it’s very much a game that tells a story through the environment (and the dead) and you can spend a lot of time exploring (and trying to survive). It is sort of mixed time periods, with your weaponry being futuristic and some areas (like being on ships and such). But the local populace and their tech level are very much early stuff, you get to explore castles and temples and cool stuff like that as well. It has quite a bit of variety and mixed future-with-past environments (while being very otherworldly at the same time).

Also if you want something that isn’t futuristic or modern, Hexen and Hexen 2 are good medieval hack-and-slash/puzzle games you can play. I wouldn’t exactly call them fast paced, although you can move very fast.

Plus all three of those have coop so if you want to play with a friend they are great as well.

Unreal Gold - Steam

HeXen - Steam

HeXen II - Steam

Metro 2033 is a great atmospheric shooter, gives you plenty of time to explore the great looking environments in between the action.

Do it like what this guy did, just with Crysis

If you like ARMA but find it too complex, I would suggest Ghost Recon, atleast the first games, like Desert storm, etc. I don’t know what Advanced warfighter is like, but the first games in the series were alot of fun, even though I was terrible at them.

If you are looking to explore terrain and not have clown car enemies to fight, I would highly recommend Unreal. It was made in 1998 and is futuristic, but the atmosphere is still amazing today.

^ This. The original Ghost Recon is quite good. More free-form than Rainbow Six’s planning phase centric gameplay. It uses an overhead tactical map and only three possible fireteams from six operators. But you can move them anywhere at any time, and adjust their firing arcs. I personally prefer Rainbow Six since you have more control overall.

There is also Dark Messiah of might and magic, which has really fun gameplay. The story, scripts and voice acting are so terrible that Uwe Boll wouldn’t even make a movie of it though.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. Brutal, but Fantastic game.

All of the above and Portal games are good

Both of these QFT. I’d also add to that list STALKER Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat, though Shadow of Chernobyl is the most atmospheric of the lot. If you do go for those, the Complete mods are extremely useful, and improve graphics, bugs and scenery without harming the game’s original style.

There’s also a new mod coming out soon for Call of Pripyat called Misery. It’s worth checking out.

ARMA’s pretty good on multi, and once you learn it, its real fun.

Far Cry 2 is pretty good, but you’ll drive for half the game and get ambushed 90% of the time driving. And then theres that annoying malaria. Otherwise pretty good.

The real old Delta Force series were some of my favorites (Delta force 1,2, Land Warrior) a long time ago, and even though they have aged, they are a sure challenge and you need to plan ahead on them. The first 2, you can’t save your game at all and if you die, you gotta restart the whole mission (Really sucks when you play a whole mission, and die at the extraction point) not to mention it takes 2-3 shots to die. Still really fun.

Never played the Ghost Warriors or Rainbow Six, but I hear they are good. SWAT 4 is an also fun game that comes to mind, but it gets pretty hard.

I’ll second Metro 2033 and Singularity. Metro 2033 might be exactly what you’re looking for, although it isn’t quite as good as Half-Life. I would also recommend Fallout 3 and/or Fallout: New Vegas. I’m playing both and having quite a bit of fun with them. Bethesda games have pretty universally mediocre stories/story execution, in my opinion, but they’re an explorer’s wet dream: the worlds are huge, and you can have hours of fun just roaming around the world completely ignoring the quests.

I already played Metro 2033(I loved it). The problem with Fallout is that enemies are way too hard(not all of them, but at the ending) to kill and are pretty retarded. They don’t take cover, you must use the VATS(I don’t remember how it was spelled) to kill them and it gets tedious.

Metro 2033, STALKER, and Dead Space (3rd person but awesome)

Probably a weird answer, but sometime after clearing the enemies you can kinda walk around and appreciate shit in the Halo series. I particularly enjoyed roaming around New Mombasa in ODST.
