So hold up

Even though I know you’re being cynical: they can do both. Just not at the same time, as I specified.

And for those who still don’t get it: unless they work as, I dunno, a nightguard or something, they can’t just sit around doing nothing all day. They’ll be busy actually working. While working, it is physically quite impossible to also develop a game at the same time.

As such, nobody decides anything. Life simply is how it is.

I was unaware that the developers had all won the lottery and decided to become jobless and spent their time doing this for however many years it’s been in development.

I can’t recall the exact number, but it was a lot.

You would be willing to pay 60 dollars for an unfinished remake of a 16-year old game?

I guess we know why companies like EA and Valve are still in business.

Shinebox, I believe you have made your point. The free mod Black Mesa still exists and you are welcome to play it. If you want to have an updated game experience, want to go to Xen or simply want to support the developers, you have the choice of paying for it. It’s that simple. Like the man says, “It’s time to choose.”

Please stop trying to force the argument.

Also, if you purchase the early access, you will get the “full game” (including Xen) for free when it releases.

So I can get an incomplete mod that took years to make, or I can pay $20 dollars and get what the devs were going to release for free.

Brilliant.

Edit: Oh wait. EVENTUALLY get. It’s not even done yet.

Yes, we understand your position.

Well the developer’s choice is:

1.) Wait until all the content is done before releasing Black Mesa, so everyone waits 1 - 2 years, but no one is in a position to complain that it is not enough.
2.) Release some of the content early for those that are already prepared to pay for it and want to contribute to further development.

1.) Harms those that would prefer to play what has already been produced (eg. HL2DM). Does 2.) harm anyone? Does it harm you to wait for a final release of a game, when you would already have been waiting anyway?

It’s less that they’re charging for an unfinished product, more that they’re charging quite some dollars for something that was going to be released for free.

We understand your position. You are just repeatedly reiterating it to a bunch of people who disagree and it isn’t especially productive. The free version is still available for you if you feel our time is not worth the money.

I will close this discussion if we keep going round in circles.

No, the mod is still free. The game is not, and never would be, free. Please find me proof that says they ever claimed that Black Mesa (the game), rather than Black Mesa (the mod) would be free.

Similarly, Counter Strike (the mod) was always free. CS:S and CS:GO are not.

Edit:

I’ll leave the rest to Text. Last post from me on this topic.

Maybe if people read the thread and didn’t post the same 3 arguments, we wouldn’t be going in circles.

To be blunt, the reason we are going in circles is because you keep bringing up the same arguments. Like I said eariler, you’ve made your point.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
