So Dear Esther is Porting...

This a suggestion I do not expect to be taken seriously because:

  1. I’m sure that BMS team has tried, and seen the mass amounts of bugs.
  2. The Developers of DE had hundreds of bugs and errors, and Dear Esther is a tiny game…

Regardless, good on them and I’m really looking forward to this.

This is not a suggestion.

I’m not going to spell it out for you… The blog entry might be an enlightening read for those who insist that BM be ported. If a game like dear ester is delayed a month because they port, imagine how long BM would be further delayed.
(I’d still love to see it ported over though. It would open up the MAC avenue, and according to the DE entry, improve visuals and frame rate at the same time.)

I’ve lurked the forums enough to know that the team has little interest in doing so, but thought they’d like to know.

There will be no porting, period.

They don’t have little interest, they have none.

Not to mention that, if the source code is released, as JamesKane seems to want, then eventually someone else will port it over themselves.

IIRC they have shown interest in doing so. The reason that they won’t do it before the release is that it’s probably not worth the time it takes to do so.
I haven’t read anywhere that they’ve decided not to. However, they’re using some tricks to mirror some of the Portal 2 engine features.

Awesome, but that sdk is not open to modders. Dear Ester is going retail so they get the fun stuff.

Didn’t he say fgd’s? Fgd ≠ source files. Without the source files they would need to rewrite the code from scratch to do anything.

Both

Oh. Well then, cool I guess >.>

@OP are you stupid or what?
Dear Esther had all these bugs and issues after they compiled their maps in the newer sdk they got from Valve.

Why is there so much hate towards the OP? Whatever, it’s irrelevant to Bm, but an interesting article non the less. Plus, I love Dear Esther (don’t lie, so do you).

New water shader is fantastic.

Did anyone here actually fucking read the OP and get it before they blasted him?

PS: did they say NPCs?

I never finished DE, so correct me if I’m wrong… I coulda sworn there were no NPCs. unless they mean birds or something.

Why? What’s wrong with being straight & to the point?

My understanding was that the developers suggested that if the complete new SDK code was available, then they would consider porting to the new version. Except if they believe that the current stage of development makes it too late for such a conversion.

At this point, if (this is entirely hypothetical and I mean to start no flame here -and I know that the devs have no intention/willingness of doing this) Black Mesa went commercial, they would get the code that Dear Esther have. But then, they would possibly have to deal with new bugs and issues from porting to the new engine.

So, since the SDK is ready for 3rd party developers to use, why is it available only for commercial games and not for mods? Is it an extra incentive for buying a license for the Source engine?

There’s your problem.

No npcs are you nuts? I totally fell of my chair when I saw that strange woman walking away from me. I saw her four times.

I was actually gonna dl DE until I saw that they were remaking it, so now I’m just biding my time not really caring whether it comes our or not.

Wish I felt that way about BM… ._.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
