A chamfer is roughly the same thing as a subdivision. It does this to an edge. The terminology can depend on your package. I’m used to poly editing in Max, for example.

What are you using to model the lamp though? If you’re having issues I may be able to help if I know what you’re using.

EDIT: Oh, my bad, I overlooked a part of your message. Are you using XSI?

I model with Autodesk Softimage.
A chamfer would be a bevel in Softimage but that’s not what I need. I tried it with hard edges again and it looked better but my wireframe is so bad that some surfaces look shitty when subdivided.

The shape isn’t overly complex. If you have a good eye you should be able to remove superfluous verts and edges manually. If that fails you can always start back from the head of the lamp.

That is if you can’t bevel the sides of the cone that makes up the shade. Seems odd that it wouldn’t work. Of course that depends on your topology (wireframe).

@King_Kaddo

It’s hard to tell without wireframe. You probably need to use more geometry. I imagine you inset on a surface to get the holes small enough? Otherwise throw those inset polygons into another smoothing group.

75% of the time it’s more geometry.

I don’t want to bevel any edges or make anything smaller.
I guess I will remake that part of the lamp and see if it will look better.

Ok that didn’t work so I just added the wholes after I subdivided the cone.
Now it looks nice and clean.

One advice… Don’t-use-boolean-when-modeling. It will just fuck your mesh up :wink:

The holes weren’t made with boolean.
I would never carve.

done

somehow pixar made a lamp cute. bravo.

I think that came more in the animations than the model.

The cuteness begins with the baby like proportions of the lamp ( big head, short limbs)

GRAND DERPY CORGY

I advise anyone never to use chamfers when trying to maintain the topology of your model when you’re using smoothing techniques. Why? Because they cannot be undone, a simple edge ring or loop will do the same trick. An edge ring/loop can be removed at any time because it does not modify the shape of the model unlike a chamfer.

Just found https://www.despair.com/ and I just got AVP for Xbox360 and I have a message for all mankind.

Oxygen levels are low. Requesting status report.

p.shit

King_Kaddo, render it with AO and we’ll take a look :wink: .

AO = Ambient Occlusion?

no AO = Ape Ontop…
of course Ambient Occlusion

I don’t know why I smiled.

Because I like the skybox and I like dev textures:

That looks pretty nifty. Really digging the left side.
