Should I Play HL1 First?

Im playing right now Half life source with High graffic detail pack. When i played it in 1999 it was the best game ever for me. It had puzzle mix up with action. Fantastic weapons and the ability to BE Gordon Freeman. Then came the opposing force that had even better weapons. I didn’t played blue’s shift. Then came Half life 2 at 2004. It had the best graphics that year and supurb Storyline. It was long and fun to play. Episode one was a little bit to-short. Episode two was quit good with sad end.

Sorry for my bad english . Im from Slovenia!

I prefered HL1 for a number of reasons, one being, the unique enemies, something I thought HL2 didn’t have. In my opinion, the Combine were the worst enemies I’ve come across, totally unimaginitive, like come on, they were storm troopers in black and white. Surely an ‘Alien Race that enslaved Earth’ would actually look a bit alien, like the Advisors are floating Blobs. Bah, I just generally hate the Combine.

The way HL2 started confused me. at the end of HL1 if you accepted gmans offer, did it carry on from then? What happened to his HEV suit (Gman said he could keep that in the final scene) Hmm.

HL1 immersed you into the story and gameplay a lot better than the second, in my opinion at least. One moment your walking through fine, seeing everyone doing their normal job then things turn upside down and you had to make it out alone, the puzzles, the gameplay, the enemies just were laid out in a perfect way to me when I first played it. HL2 annoyed me again about having to cower and run from the combine going through sewage tunnels, it made me want to go ‘Screw you lot, I’m Gordon Freeman’ ._.

Bah, I could rant all day about things I don’t like, I enjoyed the game and that just the Combine ruined it for me :frowning: (And I’m in love with the original, goldsrc ftw)
I’ve played HL1 & HL:Source and there isn’t that big difference, though go Original for some awesome mods  (azure sheep  wanted!) but Source parts are the ragdoll effects (Hardly noticable if your speeding though, sometimes can act weird) and shiny water (Which looks beautiful in places) Luckily I got it gifted for me by a friend just for the Gmod props and npcs but it isn’t worth it.

Hmm, as for people disliking the graphics, they’re just dated. I’ve played Half Life since launch so I guess I’m used to it but if your reading this and are put off by the look, your missing out D:

This post has gone on for way to long ._. I ramble on to much but meh. Get opposing force and blue shift as well, good games. 1st post w00t ^-^

You do realize that the Combine Soldiers that you fight are human right? They’re surgically augmented humans that were created by the Combine so that they could have a standing army on Earth, ready to quell any rebellion.

I do but I wanted to see more of the Combines actual race, instead of just modified humans.

They’re called Advisors. They were supposed to remain elusive, and you weren’t even really supposed to know if the world was run by aliens or not, at least not until you see them on breen’s monitor.

You get to fight them in Episode 3.

I would get HL1, but parents…gah…and don’t forget that it’s credit card only (everything ends up going past them!)

Isn’t there some way to put your WON cd key into steam and get the steam version free? no?

Yup you can.

Games tab, enter activation key. Put it in and I think you get about 5 games with it or so.

You get Half-Life, Blue Shift, Counter-Strike 1.6, Opposing Force, Deathmatch Classic, Ricochet and Team Fortress Classic.

Yes, in my opinion you should play the original half-life all of the way through before you play anything else. The game was a revolution in the gaming industry, and is still an icon of what a good game should be like.

If you haven’t played HL1, what are you doing here? D:
Stop whatever you’re doing and go play it! THAT’S AN ORDER! (You won’t regret it.)

I just Finished Half life Source with High def. It is really a great game. The story, the action, the puzzles, the enemys.

I also read the book called: Half life Raising the bar. My advice is that all of you read the book.

Speaking of Half-Life books, the first chapter of “Half-Life 2 Mods for Dummies” gives an interesting historical summary of the evolution of Half-Life.

Chapter 1 excerpt

Play Half-Life so you dont have to ask stupid questions when you play black mesa.

Half-Life Source with HD pack ftw

I like the look of those arms.

LOL… Black Mesa is really a must for everyone who havn’t played HL1…
It’s good when you have played it, but I think everyone (HL players and Non HL Players) can… no… MUST play this game…

Oh gawd the HDR is got on mah face. Also I like how good the rock texture looks, while the wall texture still looks the same as in Half-Life.

It definitely looks better then HL1 without the HD pack though.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
