Should I Play HL1 First?

I hate HD Packs that replace the MP5 with an M4. Why does every HD pack insist on doing so?

Your life is not complete until you have finished half-life 1

and if you havent played half-life…you are sad…very sad :stuck_out_tongue:

What? You mean strelok’s pack, right? Daimond’s pack replaces it with an LR300 (which is kinda unique and a nice idea IMO).

Strelok’s pack just uses the weapon models from the PS2 version. Since the M4 was included there, it uses the M4.

and yes, I don’t like the M4 either. It’s un-special-force-ish.

FINALLY someone who gives a nice SHORT and SIMPLE reply. Will finish on HL Source now since HL is buggy on win7… (On my pc at least…)

I’ve noticed it too, why do all the modelers want to use gearboxes’ illogical models and animations, instead of remaking the official Valve ones?
In LD HL, the scientist in blast pit that tells you to fire the rocket engine tries to reach into his labcoat for the morphine needle before he dies, but in the HD one, he just slowly has a heart attack : /
And the berretta can’t fire underwater in real life, unlike the glock, which can be modified to.
HD should not be synonomus with Gearbox.

It’s really annoying since there are actaully a few downloads for HL with HD models of an MP5 and the Glock, but none that update the soldiers and give them MP5’s. If someone did that I would pay money

I actually do want the MP5 do… It feels more special-op-ish, although the LR300 has that feeling to (did I mention Daimond’s pack?). But the MP5 is German, and therefore includes awesomenes (They INVENTED the assault rifle. THey also invented national-socialism, but I am willing to forgive them for that.). I actually never played with the default LD models in the Regular Half LIfe, though, just Opposing Force on my laptop (I didn’t want to risk it :stuck_out_tongue: ).

Yeah. But I kind of liked the animations for the M4, except for the firing animation. Plus, if you looked all the way down with the M4 in the HD pack, you’d notice that the M4’s V_Model, on the back part of it, cuts off. I guess that’s just the HD Pack’s bugs.

I live to serve.

Nope, don’t play HL1 EVER!!!

Contrary to what other people say, you shouldn’t play the original half-life cause if Black Mesa is supposed to be an HL1 recreation, it should be able to substitute HL1 in every way. Remakes are designed to appeal to new gamers. Like you!

In that case I’d recommend playing HL1 for comparison-reasons

@ the OP of this thread:
If you choose to not play HL1 and wait for Black Mesa, you can at least try the Half Life Demo called “Uplink”. I have a link for it here:

https://www.finnie.org/software/steamlink/

EDIT: You still need the full original version of Half-Life to run this since Steam considers this a third-party mod. However, you can buy the original Half Life 1 since there are a bunch of awesome free mods for the game. A good example would be Adam Foster’s Someplace Else.

No, you wouldn’t.

When a mod is free and has an inch of quality, what they say is “OMG mod luks amazin i wud pay moniez 4 dat!!!” Then you looks at the “Happy Birthday Garry!” thread and all you see it “OMG garry nukem iz fagot selout makin me pay moniez i hup he kilz self lol!!!”

Oh sweet! Uplink! DL now!
And yes, Someplace Else is amazing but harder than hell!

Well I’m playing through half-life right now because of this thread, it is good so far, just good. Not because of the graphics, the game-play, is not as…good as HL2, maybe the AI, maybe the lack of story<— yeah that’s it, maybe not in those words, the thing that makes me dislike HL1 so far, it the fact that there are no ‘cutscenes’ like HL2, where you go into a perfectly safe room, with Alyx or someone, watch someone talk on a TV screen, and you get a bit more of the storyline, that is missing…which I dislike. But still! It is a great game, and it is enjoyable! BM will be better I expect from what I have heard and seen!

In HL its mostly about you surviving by yourself. While in HL2 you aren’t alone. There are major differences between both games and thus are suited according to personal tastes. And also this far out in time, it can’t be expected to show the same charisma it did back when it was one of a kind, although it still is.

Moral of the Story: Wait for Black Mesa. :retard:

HL was a revolution in story-telling and immersion in 1998, but is it really that surprising that over the next six years Valve got better at those things by the time of HL2 coming out? Even from HL2 through the Episodes they’re continuing to make many improvements - Episode Two was wall to wall awesome.

I’d agree to that a billion times.

Agreed. BTW Magnusson Device = Best video game weapon EVER! I would love to use it on normal combine soldiers.

I think that everyone should play HL1 first, but then it has been years since I played it so my memory is kind of rusty.

half-life should be compared to other games of it’s era, quake2, goldeneye64, Half-Life draws the player into the game world so much better than the other FPS games of it’s time, the NPCs talked to Gordon about what needs to be done, what has happened, they guide the player which was a new idea back then, now almost all FPS games have that, so half-life should be played with the mindset of the games it was competing against in mind, rather than compared to it’s sequel made 6 years later.

BlackMesa will hopefully bring it up to par with HL2 so the player can compare the storyline and action experience with HL2, maybe even the NPC interactivity (Although in HL2 this was a great deal greater than HL1 due to storyline)

++.

also, i think this topic should have had some poll about six months ago.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
