Should I Play HL1 First?

I’ve actually told people NOT to play HL1. Anyone who’s entered the FPS gaming community within the last 3~4 years and loved HL2, I’ve straight up told them that HL1 is tens years old, and looks it. Black Mesa is going to be a far superior representation of the Half-Life universe than HL1 is currently. Of course the caviot is that HL1 was ground breaking in it day, and remains a major milestone in FPS gaming history and deserves it’s due respect.

But the general idea I leave people with is this: “If you started with HL2, then think of Black Mesa as the upcoming Prequel to HL2.”

Is this still going on?

The most pointless threads are the ones who run the longest.
Didn’t you know that by now?

Ha, ha. I just noticed that I “resurected” this thread after it being dead a month.

However, in my defense, it was on the first page. It’s not like I dug down fifteeen pages to find this thing.

Guess I’m just too use to forums where threads are usually deleted with 20 minutes.

I believe the games should be played as Half-Life, Blue Shift, Opposing Forces.
This is due to the fact that OpFor reveals what becomes of Black Mesa, where as HL left it out in the open.

It took me years to complete it! When I got it I was like 10 years old lol and all the puzzle solving really pissed me off after a while. But when I was 15 I just thought one day “I wonder If I could now complete HL1?” So I set to it over the weekend and the satisfaction of completing that game was like no other.
The chills I get from all the Half-Life games and their ending are second to none! No other series of games can deliver that feeling over and over and OVER again.

Agreed. But, when this new generation of gamers ends with BM, it would be nice to tell them to play HL1 (and HL1-Source too), only to make them see what kind of motivation the devs had when planning Black Mesa.

If you’re gonna play HL1 and/or HLS then do it BEFORE playing BMS. Otherwise it’d be like taking a step backwards.

I think you should play HL1 AND half-life 2 first, that way you can say you beat the original game and its sequel and overwrote the sequel with a pimped-out version of the original, then beat that.

Raminator, two negatives actually make a negative when added, and when subtracted if the second negative is more than the first. xD
Ex: -3 + -28 = -31
-3 - (-2) = -1

but Seriously, I think it depends what generation gamer you are. If you grew up caring about the graphics in games, then I would say “wait for Black Mesa”. But if you played HL when you were little and enjoyed it, bring back some of those memories.

Like I played HL a LOOONG time ago, and I remember enjoying smashing the scientists to bits of organs. And I brought back some of that fun recently, while also taking in the fine details of the game that I couldnt appreciate when I was 8.

EDIT: Just curious, are Op4/HLBS canon?

not in this mod.

Say it with me: product, not sum.

No.

What i like more about HL1 is the fact that the game kept me on my toes so to speak since creatures would just teleport in from out of nowhere and the soldiers and aliens were much more fierce, when in HL2 + Eps, its a walk in the park.

What happend after 6 Years, why were HL2 + Eps degraded so much.

And here I thought this endlessly circular thread had finally been laid to rest. Silly me!

IMO, you should definitely play Half-Life first, as others have said. I also am of the opinion that Half-Life 1 is superior to Half-life 2. I still go back and play HL1 every now and then, but not HL2 anymore.

What’s wrong with HL2 then?

It’s not a decade old classic yet.

But it is a classic.

To put it simple, I don’t find HL2 fun to play through anymore. I mean I’m not saying it’s a bad game or anything, I’ve just always preferred the original. Which is why I’m so excited for Black Mesa! :stuck_out_tongue:

Definitely play Half-Life. While I personally don’t think it’s as fun as Half-Life 2, it’s still an outstanding game.
