Should I Play HL1 First?

There is a nosteam Half Life1 uplink demo, here’s the link:

Ohai me too!

that’s the only demo. (besides day 1.) So saying it’s non-steam is kinda redundant, don’t you think?

Denied. HL had more chapters, and the chapters are similar in length.

Maybe I wasn’t as skilled back in those days, but I thought HL1 was far more difficult, and a good deal longer.
I think everyone should play HL1 in it’s original form, just to get an idea what qualified as excellent visuals back in the day.
Believe it or not, it was considered a big graphical leap in it’s time.

Here’s an alternative for all those who rather wait for BM instead of playing HL first… try downloading and playing Half-Life: Uplink. I believe it’s a HL demo from Sierra/Valve which has scenes not used in the final HL release.

Not only is it only 48 MB, but it’s standalone (does not require Steam). Gives a feel for the original HL (cool audio/sounds, graphics which were state-of-the-art at the time, and challenging tasks) and has the same Hazards Course as found in the full release of HL. Just Google and download off the web for free.

Good practice waiting for BM, without spoiling the actual gameplay.

Not only is it 48 mb, but about 10 minutes of play! Hooray!

It is a HL Demo, and it’s not really challenging.

But it is really fun and a very well-made demo. It’s too bad it’s not in the actual game by default…

Who cares it’s just ten minutes of gameplay. And a demo is a demo mate, just a little piece of the actual game.

exactly…

You could try the beta of Half Life 2D.

P.S. That’s right. Half Life is in 2D mode on ModDB. The graphics are crappy but this way you will be really blown away, surprised, amazed and shocked as a grid when Black Mesa comes out later this year. By the way, this is a game, NOT a mod. It is under the Games tab so you do not need any Valve GoldSrc or Source games to run this.

There was one wouldn’t work unless you had half-life 1, and then wrote it off as a mod. So saying it’s non-steam is actually not redundant.

Piratesbay…

loljk…

If you have HL2 there are probably DLable HL source levels somewhere.

i like the look of the original half life better then half life source, it felt more how do i say this, source felt kinda fake, the graphics aren’t really improved and the art style is just better in the original imo

Despite the fact that they both looked identical, except for the water?

I felt the same way. It’s like buying an illegal Malaysian pirate of a movie–it’s just about the same, but every ten minutes it says at the top of your screen ‘COPYRIGHT PARAMOUNT PICTURES’.

Definitely play the first Half-Life so you can know the dramatic differences with the look of the maps.

As soon as I figure out the release date, I’m gonna load it up and play.

No, because you won’t be surprised…

Yeah, you will see how much they change and will appreciate it. Good luck gaming.

You should definitely buy the original for all the reasons already stated… I just recently found my original copy from years ago… I could not find the case with the cd key though. I found it accepted my counter-strike key… fantastic. I think someone has stolen that key on steam… cannot get it verified. Sorry I digress, there are also some really good mods for half-life as well… plus you can have bragging rights if you need them.

Bragging rights? Of joining the very exclusive club of around 9 million people who’ve bought HL? :stuck_out_tongue:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
