Bad Company 2.
Wasn’t a demo just released for Modern Warfare? I know there’s one for Bad Company. I would try out the demos before you make a decision. Either way they’re both pretty fun.
I own both and the BC2 Campaign is longer by a few hours and the online play is more refined. I’d go with BC2 over MW2 any day.
MW4: Mercenaries is actually pretty fun, especially the matches on that tournament planet. It kinda makes up for MW4’s cruddy customization limits.

Well, I’m going to have to retract my suggestion of MW2 after hopping onto it for the first time in 5 months or so. The MP is packed & I really do mean packed with hackers. At least 50% of the 20 or so games I’ve played today had a hacker present, using AIM Bots in broad daylight. Go for BC2. MW2’s MP is definitely broken.
I got both games, BC2 on PS3 and MW2 on PC. Im a huge CoD fan so I would say MW2.
But, the best with each game : BC2 have an awesome multiplayer where you need teamwork to succed mostly. I havn’t come up with any flaws so far. MW2 multiplayer is still very good but the lack of dedicated servers and the fact that there is alot of cheaters online does not help MW2 in this case.
For the singleplayer campaign. BC2 was quite boring so I did not finish it! 
MW2 singleplayer campaign continues on the story from CoD4 and gets really exciting the longer you play it. But, it does not take very long to finish it

Bad Company 2 is Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better then cock of doody:modern whorefare.
Modern Warfail 2 is one of the worst games I’ve ever played. Just awful. Hacker after hacker. No dedicated servers. God damn painkillers. Even the SP felt more like a hollywood movie then a real game.
Bad Company 2, having played over 200 hours of it, I can say that its an awesome game, and has its epic moments, especially if you play with friends. It does have its bugs mind, you, but its far better then the overpriced game called Modern Warfail 2. The SP I enjoyed.
Screw them both. Battlefield 2.

Doom II
I don’t do so badly in MW2, but I absolutely despised BC2.
Honestly, I might take the controversy to heart and look elsewhere where people can actually agree a game is damn good. Personally, Batman: Arkham Asylum was 2009’s GOTY for me.
