Well, the idea at least is that if the law is there to serve the will of the populace, not bind it, then a large enough petition shows that the law is going against that will.
Of course, the people signing this are not all from Sweden. But, I guess you get the variable of international exposure.
The Troy Davis online petition got 258,695 signatures and he was still executed. I think they’re not taken very seriously. I wonder if any institutions would trust them even if the numbers were high enough to account for their populations.
During the run up to the second Iraq war several million people protested. We still went and bombed shit.
The only time numbers matter is just before an election. The rest of the time the governments couldn’t give a shit.
