Russian Spy Ring arrested in US!

This makes no fucking sense, a dozen people in the US just got arrested and accused of being a spy right - one of them has been released already, none of them are being charged with “espionage” because they never spied on anyone or obtained any classified information. They had all been living in the US for quite some time and had careers and marriages. They are being accused of swapping “briefcases and newspapers” (of course not containing any classified information) as well as burying money in a park or something and doing other things that seemed “spy-like.” The arrests were supposedly triggered by the fact that one of the “spies” was going to go back to russia permanently (again, not carrying information - just moving).

Can someone tell me what the fuck this is? The most rational explanation I’ve heard is that the arrests were a CIA covert op to make the Democratic government look weak on national security and therefore derail Pelosi’s CIA transparency bill that is making its way thru congress.

Leaving aside the obvious issue of whether your characterization is factual or not, how does the political leanings of the people that run the CIA have any bearing on the reasons why the CIA would not want Congress to exercise oversight over their covert activities?

What? The CIA operates overseas. They’d have nothing to do with an arrest on national soil.

I know the idea that the government is not a monolithic entity and that different sectors of the government could be involved in power struggles is ideologically inconvenient for many people, but at some point you have to allow facts to creep into your worldview.

And even allowing for the lack of concrete evidence of CIA involvement, the director of the FBI is a Bush appointee. I’m just sayin.
