… and people think GTA V is big.
yeah this is not gonna happen
Honestly the game looks like a complete waste of the world mapping.
For a minute there I thought someone was making an open-world sandbox game with scanned countries and the setting or something.
So it’s a basic-looking RPG with the selling point being that they scanned the Earth for a background with wasted detail? Shame.
Some people are calling scam on that.
Personally, whether it is a scam or not, I’m not seeing a future to it.
It doesn’t even look interesting. Certainly not worth what their “packages” are selling for.
Well yeah, the game itself looks pretty boring. But if they manage to pull off recreating the whole planet, I’ll be impressed.
So would I, but it seems REALLY ambitious. What are they gonna do about places like North Korea or the Amazon, where people can’t go or where aerial mapping is all but useless? What about the vast expanses of Asia and Africa? Who’s gonna go out into the wild and map all that? If they can’t get it all, which seems likely, are there just gonna be huge chunks of the world walled off? Why not start with, like, a single small country as a proof of concept first? Assuming they’re for real and this isn’t a scam, of course.
If you read the link they answer all of these questions. The areas they CAN’T go for political or geographical reasons will be procedurally generated. The initial plan or BLOCK ONE as they refer to it, will be a single suitably covered country.
yeah, doesn’t sound really appealing to me. All that scanning for that crap, that’s what I call a waste of time and work.
Oh, well that makes sense. Where is that? I don’t see like an FAQ or anything.
EDIT: Nvm I’m blind.
So it is a bit more reasonable than it seems at first. It’s definitely interesting but I think I’ll just watch and see what happens. I’m not dying to play a game like this, but the real world mapping data is interesting. Wonder if they could maybe make that data available to other companies or modders to use in other games.
I do wish the game part of the game wasn’t top-down. The Earth is awesome, give me a freely rotating camera.
Of course, if they did that, it would be impossible to use all of that data and stream it with good draw distance without a server farm.
Even so, it sounds like top-down DayZ with geographic data, which is a waste of the potential. They should stand apart and do something new with the map design. Maybe a sci fi Oregon Trail or something. I’d totally make that game.
you could use a reasonably good LOD system, it’s really nothing impossible.
try making an fps out of that size of a map and gaming will have jumped into the future by at least 30 years
I’d rather just buy a sword and go outside
You can do that but you really shouldn’t.
the local cops already hate me for my boot knives and reckless driving so i don’t see a sword making my life any worse
