Recommended Sandbox style games?

Grand Theft Auto 4 (Awesome story, and the add ons are coming to PC soon, so its getting on for 100 hours of game)

Red Faction Guerilla (Insanely fun, and you can take the world apart with your hammer)

Mercenaries (The original, mixed opinions on this but I thought it was excellent fun)

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Massive World, great fun especially if you’re into RPGs. Get the story out of the way and get stuck into the side quests)

Out of them, GTA4 is the unmissable one. The depth and detail of the world is incredible. If your PC can’t run it, GTA San Andreas was also incredibly fun and easily the second choice

EDIT: Just realised how many times I wrote ‘fun’ in that response :mono:

Again, though not technically a ‘sandbox’ game I’ve been finding Borderlands immensely satisfying. Big explorable world, repeditive shooter gameplay and useless character levelling and skill trees.

But oh so very addictive. Found it to be a good WoW antidote to feed my cravings. :stuck_out_tongue:

Is Fable a sandbox? If so, that one, but I don’t think if it is or not… :\

Shenmue maybe? (Great game, but I don’t know if it is a sandbox :stuck_out_tongue: )

Plus I’m trying to recommend something “different” :stuck_out_tongue:

Ahh, Jade Empire?

If you want a really, really big game and it mustn*t be a FPS, then i would defenitly say:

World of Warcraft!

4 continents to explore (A Fifth will come) … 10 000 or more quests … Tons of dungeons to explore … many items to find. You may play how you like.

Flying over an whole continent, sitting on a dragon can be cool, even when you played it for years and you thought you have already seen everything ^^.

Depends on the console. if it’s PC then Fallout 3 should be good especially with the five DLC’s or add-ons for it. As for console, GTA4 maybe?

Edit: platform, not console…

I do that

minecraft.

Also, burning sand. AHa

The only bad part of RFG that i can remember was the soldiers.

They kept killing me while i tried to blow up their stuff. :meh:

San Andreas. In my opinion the pinnacle of the GTA series.

Vice City was brilliant and GTA4 was alot of fun, though it focused more on realism than actual fun things…

How dare they! Take heart in the fact that whatever you’re trying to blow up usually squashes them seconds after this

San Andreas is immense fun, its certainly got the least constraints

I liked the serious direction that GTA4 took, but the best of both worlds would have to be the Ballad of Gay Tony addon. Its still got a (for the most part :stuck_out_tongue: ) serious story, but also has tanks, attack choppers (proper ones, with missiles) shotguns with exploding shells, skydiving and gold-plated cars

It has skydiving!??!?!?! I loved to do that on SA, taking my gang into the air in an ambulance, spawning a parachute locking the doors and jumping out, so much fun, then I would search for the ambulance later and find them all dead. xD

Just Cause 2 needs a stronger grapple hook IMO.

It does indeed

There’s base jumping challenges to hit moving trucks and stuff, and it looks so goddamn good

Red Faction, GTA games. My top ones in terms of sandbox games.

Quoted, enlarged font, and changed the font to look more intimidating, for the fucking truth!
It’s $10 on Steam, so you have absolutely no excuse not to own this masterpiece.

Jesus Christ!!! Your replies regarding video games leads me to believe you treat them how a believer would treat religion :3

Anyway, Crysis games, Far Cry games, BattleField, Falcon 13 (Air Force simulator), GTA games etc

…I just like Vice City… :frowning:
Also, that was kind of the joke.

I found all GTA’s (From 2 to everything else) pretty boring :\ …
GTA san andreas for example, I couldn’t stand the characters…

“yo motha fucka this ma’ tawn, get outta ma’ town negro”

No thanks :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re thinking of Saints Row 2.

Hello all! I’m new to your forum (first post) and would just like to say how awesome the Black Mesa conversion is!
It is so awesome.

Anywhooose, to answer Combine’s question, I have only come across one free form sandbox game that I would thoroughly recommend and that game is Mount&Blade.

Developed by the independent studio TaleWorlds and published by Paradox Interactive, the game itself is a medieval emulator (which is a gross oversimplification) in which you do basically whatever you want. Besides having a slew of positive reviews the game is also supported by a very active modding community.

I’ve been a member of their forum for a few years now and a player since the early beta days, and I can vouch for both the stock of the community and the attention the developers pay to their fans.

I’d advise you try the demo first in case it is too free form for your taste.
Also I’d advise you to consider holding off your purchase until the 30th of March, the release date of Mount&Blade: Warband which is a stand alone multiplayer expansion to the original.

You can purchase both from the TaleWorlds site (please do!) although Warband will only be available from the 30th of March.
Both titles are also available for purchase on Steam.

If you join the forum, tell them Nightblade±- sent ya.
I hope to do battle with you in the wilds of Calradia soon!
