I wonder how they are intending to use the serial key system. Will it be algorithm based, or will they give each individual copy a key unique to that copy.
Is that even possible? And if so, why hasn’t it been done by computer companies. It would put a cog in the workings of keygen’s, surely.
If it’s not possible, then Sony are actually dumb.
[Slight Rant Ahead]
Like Sersoft said, to the hackers Piracy is a hobby. Even Steam hacks are still around because of this. All of Valve’s new games are hacked because of this. Whether they become popular to download is really what makes a difference.
As for the people that download these things, you have to remember that a lot of pirates have their own moral code. For example, they might download it as an unbiased demo, and they can see whether the game is really worth buying or not. Or they can download it if they intend to pay for it at a later date when they are able, but don’t want to wait to do that. r to download games that they have already bought, but lost.
Piracy is not, and never has been, and black & white issue. It really depends on whether you follow your own moral code, let the law guide your actions instead, or just do it so that they don’t have to pay. Either of the first two approach’s is fine in life (I may not agree with letting the law guide you, but that’s just me). It’s when people just plain download it so that they don’t have to pay that it becomes a problem.
The people that do that are what gives piracy such a bad name. But one thing that shouldn’t have been done was confusing piracy with stealing. That was purely government propaganda. Stealing involves taking something that belongs to someone else. Piracy’s idealism is based in sharing, not taking. It is usually argued that you’re taking money from the company that would otherwise be bought from, and unfortunately, this is true when piracy is used selfishly, but not all pirates are like that.
I can completely understand the governments and big corporation’s take on this. Our economy simply would not work if piracy was the norm, however I dislike that they do not take into account the way in which piracy is used by the person.
Sadly it seems those of us who try to retain our morals when pirating are part of the sad minority.
And after reading through what I just wrote, I realised this isn’t really a completely appropriate place to post most of this, but oh well.
