PS3 + Piracy

So as most of you know, it happened and now Sony is going to try and strike back.

Though it seems that they’re going to be punishing their customers more than the pirates for some reason.

Thoughts? Baseless speculation? Fun analogies about sharks and murder? Predictions?

Surely, that’s been true for every anti-piracy endeavour. Unless you start giving things away, pirates will always pirate. And they’ll always find their ways round any mechanism you put in place.

The reason people are happy to pirate is that they’re not missing out on anything anymore. When I first started gaming in the mid 80s games would always come with gifts from things as extravagant as t-shirts or simply a glossy map of the play area. These days you’re lucky if you get a manual.

pirates do it just because it’s their hobby, as long as something is DRM protected they will spend as long as it takes to bring us free stuff, but it’s like taking candy from a stranger, you never know if it’s got any worms or trojans in it

Wouldn’t adding security codes to all the games destroy places that sell used games?

selling used games is illegal in case you didn’t know

In Belgium it’s legal, but Sony spoke about adding an serial who’s bound to the disc itself and u need to go online to activate ur game

Really? How do stores get away with it?

Also, inb4troll’d

technically the publisher could sue the store for making money off a used game

^ Wont hold up/wont be enforced. It was just a district judge misunderstanding the the concepts. It was a law that was aimed for Digital downloads and special software application. What he did was allow the law to become too vague and cover physical copies of games. You think that game stop would allow this to happen without first at least saying something.

As for the piracy argument, Flatline you are close but confusing piracy prevention and deterrence. Nothing will stop piracy, ever. As long as there are hackers and 12y/o’s who can launch µTorrent and run hack using tracert, people will download games. BUT piracy in slowed in two ways. You can attempt prevention by using DRM and/or deter would be pirates by offering legal customers a better experience. Reason steam works is because they offer a balance of the two options. Sure steam DRM has been broken many times, but most of us (if now all) use it because we fund value in the service that pirating cant offer. If you don’t find value in steam and can pirate games easily, many people will. When placed in an environment of almost guaranteed immunity from repression for illicit activity people can push morals to the side (me included on occasion).

worth a watch

god I hate G4

I wonder how they are intending to use the serial key system. Will it be algorithm based, or will they give each individual copy a key unique to that copy.

Is that even possible? And if so, why hasn’t it been done by computer companies. It would put a cog in the workings of keygen’s, surely.

If it’s not possible, then Sony are actually dumb.

[Slight Rant Ahead]

Like Sersoft said, to the hackers Piracy is a hobby. Even Steam hacks are still around because of this. All of Valve’s new games are hacked because of this. Whether they become popular to download is really what makes a difference.

As for the people that download these things, you have to remember that a lot of pirates have their own moral code. For example, they might download it as an unbiased demo, and they can see whether the game is really worth buying or not. Or they can download it if they intend to pay for it at a later date when they are able, but don’t want to wait to do that. r to download games that they have already bought, but lost.

Piracy is not, and never has been, and black & white issue. It really depends on whether you follow your own moral code, let the law guide your actions instead, or just do it so that they don’t have to pay. Either of the first two approach’s is fine in life (I may not agree with letting the law guide you, but that’s just me). It’s when people just plain download it so that they don’t have to pay that it becomes a problem.

The people that do that are what gives piracy such a bad name. But one thing that shouldn’t have been done was confusing piracy with stealing. That was purely government propaganda. Stealing involves taking something that belongs to someone else. Piracy’s idealism is based in sharing, not taking. It is usually argued that you’re taking money from the company that would otherwise be bought from, and unfortunately, this is true when piracy is used selfishly, but not all pirates are like that.

I can completely understand the governments and big corporation’s take on this. Our economy simply would not work if piracy was the norm, however I dislike that they do not take into account the way in which piracy is used by the person.

Sadly it seems those of us who try to retain our morals when pirating are part of the sad minority. :frowning:

And after reading through what I just wrote, I realised this isn’t really a completely appropriate place to post most of this, but oh well. :stuck_out_tongue:

Some sports games already use a key system. If you want the full game (online play+other crap) you have to enter the key that comes with the game. Once you use the key it binds to your account. So if you buy the game used you are required to purchase a key from the publisher if you want any online features. In this case a keygen wouldn’t work as they are verified online. As for using them with offline games it could be possible but as soon as you connected to the internet $10 says they would be checked.

Who cares about the PS3 anyways?

People who only have a PS3 maybe?

Anyways the new update rolled out with a few hidden security features, turns out it’s already been cracked and rendered useless. Go Sony!

ps3 has no game

Yeah I use steam for multiplayer games, buy really really really good single player, and torrent everything else.

Sony now has a list of IP’s of everyone who watched geohot’s video. Neat huh?

nothing’s going to happen
except to GeoHot

using the ips they are going to calculate how much damage they(he) did to sony
then GeoHot is going to take the whole load of shit from sony

p cool eh

I was more expecting them to use it to check which of their PS3 users have checked the video so they have an easier time finding the pirates.
