Activision: The New EA
Capitalism at it’s best boys, take it all in.
I trust you because your avatar is wearing a top hat and monocle and is also Bender who is great. So you clearly know of this “capitalism”. Please inform me of its ways of Ass-hatery.
I think we have too little information to sink this idea too quickly. We have a CEO “hinting” that CoD would go subscription based.
Now, subscription base makes sense for games like WoW or any other game where its playability would require constant monitoring/service from the developer. For wow, they need to maintain boat loads of servers and accounts, all of which cost money. You are spending your 15 bucks a month to get something.
If COD goes MMO, then this model is logical.
But an FPS? Unless this next CoD comes with massive amounts of updates, add-ons, new maps, new campaigns, and basically gives you something to pay for every month, it simply is not worth it. Simply getting the ability to play the game for the month is not worth 15 dollars, unless you only intend on playing for 4 months.
As mentioned, Valve has released FPS games that have come with constant updates and additional free content. This content is worth money, yet they give it away for free to the PC owners.
Not that I WANT to pay for Valve’s extra goodies, but lets face it: If Valve asked for a small fee for the TF2 updates (I know, they do on XBox… not their choice) it would actually be quite fair.
Oh, and Activision throwing some stupid idea around hardly comes anywhere near even possibly being the “future of gaming.” Over react much?

What. The. Fuck. (You gotta look at them both.)
Not meant for those of us with taste. Valve doesn’t have much of a market in Asia it makes sense to start getting into Asian market to have a (I think) Korean developer help. Most of the FPS I have played that came from Asia where MMOFPS with micro-payment so, yeah…
Also since most of the Korean fps I have played just rips off Western titles it makes sense for them to take a ride on the Cod Zombie train.
Well technically it isn’t their game. They’re just licensing rights to the name for the Japanese company- but it’s VERY strange.
What do you expect?
EA isn’t that bad, really. Like I said before, Madden aside, there are plenty of great games under the EA label (see: Mass Effect 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.)
Activision, while still publishing good games, are in a league of their own when it comes to corporate greed.
True, and with Bungie’s spiral into failure, at least they have the decency to release something somewhat new with each milking attempt.
You mean the one that doesn’t exist?
Bungie is just ripping people off, why would they sell map packs, then later restrict certain gameplay modes that were actually enjoyable, Big team for instance, THEN give the map packs out for free with ODST? Can we get a positive reply for that?
I am not sure what you mean, that you don’t believe that their games are becoming crappier and crappier, or that they are loosing ground in terms of players? Or are you being sarcastic? Sometimes I just cannot tell.
No, but we can get a positive reply for them not charging a monthly fee above and beyond that required by Microsoft.
