Considering the sudden Valve-Mac hype, it wouldn’t surprise me that the “future Valve projects” he’d talk about, had nothing to do with EP3, but everything with Steam for Mac.

That’s hardly worth making an announcement about. People with macs probably don’t even know what a computer game is.

Actually the beans is Chell in this case not the robot, and if it is it’s probably a placeholder. Maybe our new robot friend is going to be called “Beans”.

One of the radios gave a phone number that was a BBS (Bulletin Board System) connection number, and a bunch of people are connecting to it, and it can be logged into using the username and password “backup”. It then starts attempting to stream images and text. You can see some of it here.

I investigated a little further, (meaning I watched the documentary again WHOA ) and interesting similarities between the ARG and this phone phreaking stuff started to appear.

BSS and Dial-Up modems are outdated and almost extinct technology much like these automated phone exchanges and phone phreaking itself. It’s pretty much obvious now that the ARG refers heavily to old computer technology stuff but combining the ARG to phone phreaking and old hardware didn’t really make much sense and seemed very far fetched to me until the documentary mentioned the device the phone phreaks built themselves in order to outsmart the automatic exchange system. They called it The Blue Box.

How does all of this blend together and what does it mean in the end?

If I’m right, and I doubt it myself but let’s just be silly for a little longer, adding up all this hypothetical information, I’m going to make the bold(stupid) statement that The Blue Box is the name of the new game compilation following The Orange Box. The Blue Box will contain Portal 2 (+ perhaps Half Life Episode 3) and is going to be announced on the 11th of March, this year on the GDC.

Of course this could all be just a nice little coincidence and dinosaur26.jpg is actually something completely different or the stretch is just far too big. I don’t know but I think this is kind of interesting and probably deserves to be checked out a little further.

Interesting trivia/theories/stupid stuff:

The term Orange Box also describes a device, that enables you to fake caller IDs.
The Blue Box would continue the coloured box theme.
The Black Box was probably held back so the name can be used for the final compilation that concludes Half Life in the future.
