Portal on Ubuntu

Okay, so i have managed to get portal up and running on my laptop with Ubuntu, but i have a SMALL graphics problem, where the game is very near to unplayable.

The launch options i have put in is -dxlevel 70 -width 800 -height 600. I can play the game, but it is fucked up and laggy as hell. I used PlayOnLinux to install it

I got all source games running with -windowed on ubuntu, and the graphics were pretty shit and it was pretty laggy. Also, Hammer world editor is f***ed and black. So yeah, theres not really any point in trying until Valve make it compatible, they probably wont though. If they do I will love them some more.

i’ll switch completely to ubuntu if Valve makes Steam + games for it (i have a dualboot setup right now)

DirectX issue. Ubuntu has trouble with DirectX. TRy using wine

playonlinux is a modded version of wine to better support games, but i’ll try normal wine

I don’t see what’s so bad about playing the games on windows d: is it really that much of a hassle that you have to go through that much?

They probably prefer their Linux OS’s because it allows them to do things that Windows won’t ever allow. It’s easier to edit and play around with, and it’s also a better programming environment than Windows.

So many reasons. Although, it can be very complicated to use.

So, if they had Steam for Linux, I am sure they would be in heaven.

Linux is pretty awesome, but large corporations are uninterested. Until they are, just go for a dual-boot system and use a large HD.

Yes, i know that linux is prett ymuch the shit when it comes to stuff like that, but like he said, he has dual boot, so playing portal on linux is still pretty retarded imo

yeah, i have dualboot, but since Ubuntu is the OS i use the most, i want to try to run steam games in ubuntu :stuck_out_tongue:

try installing d3dx9 and maybe fontpacks from winetricks, can also use WINEPREFIX env for playonlinux

Just use normal Wine. Seriously, just get the latest version and use it. None of this PlayOnLinux crap. I used CrossOver for a while and it screwed up more than it worked.

My first question is this: Could your laptop play Portal if you just played with Windows? What are the specs? Good enough? If not, then there’s your problem. If it can, then try these:

  1. Get rid of those launch options. DX 7? Really?

  2. Try these launch options: -silent -applaunch 400 -window -novid -dxlevel 80 -width 1024 -height 768 (with your resolution, of course)

it played garrys mod just fine, except it couldn’t render the blood particles(so i guess the portal particles are the biggest problem)… doesn’t -dxlevel 80 fix that?

im removing playonlinux, installing wine and reinstalling steam and portal

I had portal running on ubuntu, it had a minor graphical glitch but I think that only happened on the menu.

If I still have it installed then I will post the launch options.

Yeah, really, use wine. Also, use winehq: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9432
Is awsm.

I did, but it is just the same as before

linux sucks for gaming but I can tell you that the real WINE is better than any modified version of it.

that’s why i installed normal wine

I think i had the same problem a while back. Grab all your Window’s font files and install them on linux… should remove that bar coding.

okay, i’m doing that ASAP… thanks!
