Portal 2, source engine graphics very dated ?

We’ll see.

source 2007 was source 2. Now they’re on source 3.5

no, but you know, how about they make the fog black ?

That comment blew my mind.

In an interview, Doug Lombardi stated, that you can call the current source engine 1.5

I’d call it 1.1 tbh.

-1

We are currently on source 0.01523333333(and so on) - 3.56401! Can we get back on topic now or do one of us have to call GabeN and ask him what the current version of the source engine is?

Since Source is running out of mileage a good question to ask is what engine should be the base for Source 2. I think Valve ought to utilize Id Tech 5, after all goldsrc was the derivative form of id tech 2. Either they do this or just write a new engine from scratch, but trying to gain mileage out of Source at this point just isn’t plausible.

Why do you seem to think that Source is running out of mileage? What’s your evidence of this, that Portal 2 doesn’t look like Crysis?

Source is a modular engine, I’ve said this before. If Valve really felt like it, they could probably code enough stuff into Source to make it look as good as other games. The question is if its worth the effort, and how hard it is to add it into Source. But in no way is Source “running out of mileage”, it can keep going as long as Valve wants it to keep going, because that’s how Valve built it.

Source is not dead yet … look at cinematic mod its based on orange box version so when portal 2 version tools will be released it will look even better.
And with Dota2 cloth simulation no more jigglebones

Irrelevant. We’re the consumers, we don’t give a shit how impressive the engine is on a technical level, all we care about is how impressive it is visually.

I agree, the Portal 2 engine isn’t quite keeping up with the rest of the gaming world. However, I’d rather see a huge revision to source rather than an entirely new engine. Whether that is technically practical I don’t know, so it’s up to Valve to decide.

EDIT: oh shit I had no idea this thread had 4 pages.

What evidence you ask ? I dont know ?
MAYBE THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME ??!?!?!

Now thats some blind fanboyism you have there O_o
Run portal 2, then run any aaa game thaat came in last 3 years, compare …

So just because a game doesn’t look as good as other games means the engine is running out of mileage? It can’t possibly be because the developers decided not to spend as much time on graphics? I’d, idk, think a little before calling somebody a blind fanboy if I were you

Valve purposely develops their games so older machines can run them on high as well… DX8 and 9

Everyone else… DX10-11

Of course their games wont look as good as any “aaa” game out there.

[COLOR=‘Red’]Source Engine kicks ass.

Most games that have DX10 or 11 don’t make use of many of the features anyways. Valve doesn’t just not do better graphics for older hardware. It is also so they can get games out faster.

On the topic of version number, why does it matter if its “Source 2” or whatever its the features that are important.

Yeah one of the biggest 3 party developer in the industry, rolling around 50% of all digital distribution from steam, dosnt have time to work on graphics ? Think for a second what you talking about. They got more money and manpower than its needed to do a new engine every year.

It has nothing to do whit them thinking of old pcs, its just that they cant push anything more on consoles with that old engine. Valve is multi platform now, so we might as well get used to the fact none of their games will have better graphics than portal 2 until new generation of consoles comes. There is none other excuse than greed that they didnt develop a new engine with multi platform support in mind.

The same goes for why dosnt portal 2 support dx10-11, since consoles dont. The exact same bullshit we got with crysis 2.

And valve got waaaay to greedy to work 2 versions of assets, textures, and engine, only so pc gamer can have better graphics. Gotta wonder what they do with all that cash O_o

Minecraft.

Let’s wait to play it to see how necessary it is :bulb:

Also minecraft’s AAA status is highly debatable. Read: Nonexistant

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
