Portal 2 PS3 Steamwork features announced

I think whether or not this happens comes down to who is hosting the content. Sony sure as hell ain’t gonna do it for free, and while the two obviously worked out a pretty sweet deal, I’m not sure Sony is willing to give up enough control to allow Valve to distribute whole games from the Steam server. I figured it would just be an updates and patches type thing.

The one thing I’m fairly sure of is that IF Valve is allowed to give PC buyers the PS3 version for free, they’ll do it.

fairly interesting flaming so far…

A personal note: my inner PS3 v. PC debate has been concluded, the result of which being peaceful unity. :retard:

I has feeling pretty down today until I read this, SO THNX U GUISE.

Why?

Praise VALVe not Sony.

PS3 users are getting a copy of the game for PC, but Sony probably won’t let PC users get a copy of the game for PS3…

Matters little, my chum. What’s important, to me at the very least, is that Portal 2 is trying hard to get rid of wedges driven between players of different platforms. Do not be stingy with your gratitude, Valve or Sony, praise all whom made this possible

This really makes little sense to me. If that were so, then why even have a pc copy? If the ps3 copy comes with the pc copy, and the regular pc copy doesn’t come with the ps3 copy, then why the hell would anyone ever buy the pc copy?

My guess: pc users will get a code that can be activated on a ps3 to download the game.

I really like the idea in the comments of buying the ps3 copy, activating the pc code and then returning the game for a refund. :stuck_out_tongue:

Again, who is going to host this magical PS3 game data for all of us to download? I’m not saying you’re wrong, but it does seem unlikely that Sony will foot the expense on it, and it seems even less likely (for a million reasons) that Sony will allow Valve to host it from Steam. That opens a big can of legal worms because Sony is essentially giving Valve full access to their customers PS3s and if Steam ever got hacked or Valve screwed something up, Sony would potentially be liable. Bottom line, it’s complicated to do things like that.

It is very possible something was worked out, but the fact that no one is reporting that PC users get the PS3 version is not very heartening. I hope my instincts are wrong though.

i don’t know why they’d report it only one way if it was happening both ways.

Why would anyone who owns P2 for PC ever want to play it on PS3?

Local splitscreen? Kinda nice to have when you have people over.

Thanks for sharing Maxey. I wasn’t sure if I would buy the PS3 version or the PC version since I have all my games in my Steam account but now I’m definitely going to buy the PS3 version (my pc is kinda weak for Portal 2 so…)

Good points. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Consoles do have their pluses.

If it’s possible, I might just buy the ps3 version activate the pc copy and then sell the disc to a friend.

imagine you can’t play the PC version while the PS3 version is online

They did say steam chat enabled so it’s almost like logging in to steam

I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the CD keys area, they had a key for the PS3 version that you could download from the PSN. That, or they’d sweet talk Sony into letting them do Steam’s distribution on a limited scale.

Of course, if it linked a PSN code to your Steam account, it would only do it if you bought the PC version, so you couldn’t get rid of your PS3 disc and still play the PS3 version.

I like the idea of Valve using as many of their Steamcloud features as they can on a console game, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of Portal, so I may end up skipping Portal 2 entirely.

I’m not a fan of the direction they took with the storyline and characters, but I’m going to play it just for the level/graphic design, looks really fresh and well polished.

What I think would be really cool, but probably not going to happen, is if PSN and steam entirely merged. It’d be nice if Gaming all became centralized as Valve is doing; you could seamless go back and forth from your pc to your PS3 and anything purchased on one would work on the other. If such a thing happened I’d go out and buy a PS3. I think Valve has really struck gold and ms is really fucking up and missing out. A merge would greatly benefit ps3 and pc as I really doubt there are many people who buy something on their PS3 and buy it again on the pc.

I think it’d be nice if one of the two console brands died out so it would end the anti-consumer system of exclusivity and the fanbase would no longer be split in two. With this new deal struck I’m leaning towards PS3 coming out alive.

or no no fucking no never

ya,no

There should ALWAYS be more than one console around. Competition and consumerism drives competitive pricing and advances in technology. IF Sony was the only one in the ring the ps3 would still cost $600 and If it was MS we would all be complaining about the rrod still (en masse).

Fair enough. Nonetheless, it’d still be great for PS3 and PC gaming to merge. Having both console and pc would be a lot more appealing if you only ever had to pay for one copy of each game to play it on both.

You sound less like an ass when you bother to explain yourself. But I guess you’re probably trying to come off as an ass, your like the little kid in the classroom who always acts out to gain attention.

yep

thanks for the analysis, freud. where do i mail the check

Meh. Fancy’s the biggest butthurt baby on this forum. Eventually you’ll learn to

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
