Pleasantly surprising games

Games that you thought would be balls but turned out to be pretty fun.

Batman Arkham Asylum. I’m distrusting of ANYTHING that is a spin-off of a popular movie franchise as they are usually just spat out very quickly with the hopes that people liked the movies so much they’ll buy the game regardless of its quality. Arkham Asylum, however, is definitely up there as one of the funnest games I have ever played. The combat system was lots of fun, the acrobatic exploration wasn’t overdone as in TRU, it was tons of fun to go searching for Riddler’s tricky riddles and hidden trophies and the characters were humorous interesting and to a certain extent believable.

Yeah Arkham Asylum was a great game.

Mine would have to be New Vegas. I hated Fallout 3, and had heard that New Vegas was just the same stuff. And it was. And I loved it. Go figure.

lol. Why’d yo hate Fo3? I liked both games but New Vegas was definitely the best of the two.

The writing and voice acting in New Vegas is far better than FO3’s. It also helps it was made by the original creators of the franchise.

FO3’s wasteland felt so boring and repetitive, its game play was annoying to no end, and I just didn’t feel like exploring. Somehow this didn’t apply to New Vegas.

I thought Killing Floor would just be a shitty retail version of a Counter-Strike zombie Mod.

Turns out that’s exactly what it is, albeit an incredibly entertaining little game with a handsome art style, vigorous gameplay, and great voice acting. It’s one of the better FPSers of our time.

New Vegas, hands down the game of which I’ve had the lowest expectations and has given me the most enjoyment. Oblivion 2 - err, Fallout 3 - was really disappointing, but it must have been that some of the Black Isle guys were behind New Vegas that made it feel like it had some of that Fallout magic back that was lacking in FO3. I always considered the series to have peaked at FO2, but New Vegas is my favourite now. It’s got that Fallout charm that you can’t quite put your finger on.

Defense Grid: The awakening. A tower defense game I bought in a recent Steam sale for 2,50 euros. I though it’d be pretty lame… I mean, it’s tower defense right? And how cool could it possibly be, for only 2,50 euros? Still, reviews were somewhat positive about it, so out of curiousity I thought I’d give it a try.

Since then I’ve spent 67 hours playing it… and I don’t think I’m done yet.

I enjoyed Bullet Witch. Sure, the voiceovers were horribe, and the graphics were a bit low quality for a 360 game. (most people would say PS2 quality, but the PS2 wouldn’t be able to handle the characters) The gameplay was simple and pretty fun, and the physics were great for the time. (PhysX) The story was ridiculous, which could be good or bad, depending on your preference.

War For Cybertron. Had my doubts about a Transformers game, but it was quite good. Only would like a little more variety in the environments, and somehow increase replayability (though I guess that’s a pretty subjective thing).

Minecraft.

I saw it and was like whats so great about this that everyone is so hyped about. (Survival and Building stuff just made me think well there is both those in gmod) I torrented it to try it, then realized why everyone loves it. I bought it about a month ago.

Plants vs Zombies. “Charmed to the teeth.”

Machinarium. Got it in the humble indie pack. Brilliant little gem.

Great game, that one. If you’re a fan of it you should check out Samorost 1 and 2, made by the same people. I think they’re both on steam too.

Yeah, I played them too. Short but sweet. Hope they make a longer one this time. If you know what you’re doing, Machinarium can be beat in less than an hour.

I just remembered Spelunky. It’s very old school, can be very difficult at times, and is pure fantasticalness. I highly recommend this game, just google it. It is a free game!

When you die you have to start over, however your progress is sort of saved in a unique way. I don’t want to spoil it.

Minecraft.

I played the the free version, and after 3 minutes I realized how much fun it is, and bought it.

Xmen Origins: Wolverine.

Transformers: War for cybertron.

Tron 2.0

House of the dead: overkill

Spiderman 2

Def Jam: Fight for NY

list goes on…

This game is pure win. It’s a manly party game. From Burger King.
