Play 4 free but pay 2 win in tf2?

I’ve been playing tf2 for a while now (Who am I kidding? Since it came out.) and have been noticing a scary trend in the induction of new weapoms in the game. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against having new weapons added to the game, or even having to pay for said weapon(s). My problem is this:

Not only is this weapon almost hilariously overpowered, it requires absolutely no skill to use, has infinite ammo, and is expensive as ****. If thats not some sort of God weapon I don’t know what is, as the only “drawback” it has is that it does reduced damage to buildings, which is moot considering that one charged shot can disable any structure for four seconds. I saw a thread yesterday where some guy was complaining about the injustices of tf2 and how hes perpetually being raped by sentry guns built by the God like engies, and now I can kind of understand where hes coming from.

The solution to the guys problem yesterday, would have been to go spy, sap the sentry and then backstab the engie while hes repairing it. But how would you counteract what is basically a big rape machine disguised as a rocket launcher? I mean seriously I thought this thing was a joke, it lights people on fire too, how is that even remotely fair? The asshole in the video basically rides a one man train on the entire opposing team with one weapon.

I hope this does not set the precedent for other weapons that valve is making for tf2, as this looks likes the biggest **** you from valve ever. So do you think tf2 really will be play for free but pay to win in the near future, or am I just over thinking things (again)?

Welllll in garth’s opinion Engie was overpowered anyway, so wouldn’t this be a fix to that problem?

^^^ Not the problem, the weapon completely rapes face. I just played against it earlier in the morning.

It only rapes everything else as much as a regular rocket launcher would.

Aside from sentries, but for that see Post #2.

  1. No random crits. This means no clutch crits to save you, which good players can get pretty often (the more kills/damage you do in a life, the higher your crit chance is.)
  2. You are practically immobile while doing the charge shot. And since it only minicrits players its only useful for disabling a sentry, which isn’t that great considering an engy can repair it. It’s basically a sapper, so you need teammates to help with the sentry anyway or its gonna come back up.
  3. You still have to reload the damn thing, and its just as slow or slower than the regular rocket launcher. So who cares if it takes no ammo? Ammo is plentiful. Reload time is what matters.
  4. Less damage to sentries, so if you come face to face with one the sentry is probably gonna win.

So yeah, it sucks pretty bad IMO. Played with it for a couple minutes and got rid of it.

@Orpheon the charged shot’s blast radius more than makes up for its slowing down of the soldier, plus it sets people on ****ing fire. ON ****ING FIRE. Only the pyro should have that ability. Also it may be a pain to reload, but it has five shots (more than the other rocket launchers), and the companion weapon, rapes major face, if you need to reload with the cow mangler 5000. And I’m not going to lie, I suck, that’s why I play as the spy and help out the team that way. I crafted the cow wrangler today just so that I could give it an honest review, and I got a triple kill with it right out of the gate.

TF2 was an amaazing game on release, it felt as it should, it was a team death match, a solid class based shooter, i’m not even sure what it is now, some sort of mess.

Use Vanilla servers.

^^^ Not the problem here. I don’t mind at all if they are adding new weapons. The problem is, is that its too powerful

I was playing against these earlier, and they really are waaaaaaay too over powered. Valve really screwed up by adding these in. Its the prime weapon for n00bs, but its new, so good players will use it too. WTF!?!

This soldier update was completely unnecessary, especially after the recent uber update in which the soldier received a boatload of new shit. The worst part of the new rocket launcher is all the positive attributes and a lack of proper negatives. Reduced dmg to buildings, BUT you can still temporarily disable. Reduced movement speed BUT guaranteed mini-crits after charge. Setting victims on fire PLUS 5 rounds instead of 4 PLUS infinite ammo. Christ, you can still even rocket jump with it. This weapon really needs a proper nerfing. IMO, remove the fire feature, thats for pyros. Keep the infinite ammo, but reduce it to 3 or 4 rounds and perhaps, disable its rocket jumping. The charging and guaranteed mini-crits, plus its inherent power should be satisfactory.

IMO the pyro really needs a proper update, the detonator is a fucking slap in the face piece of shit. Im hoping we see some creative items when meet the pyro comes out, and it better not take two years to be released.

Sometimes I feel the all the new weapons and updates slowly remove balance from the game, especially when weapons like the cow mangler are introduced.

I was playing against these things today, and I don’t really have a problem with them practically. From the video they do seem to reload slower, the rocket feels slower, not sure if it actually is, and soldiers are really easy to headshot when they are charging (I play sniper). My main problem with them is they reallly ruin the theme of the game imo. They don’t fit into the art style at all. The other problem with them for me at least (depends on your comp specs) is they really mess with my fps when the rocket gets close to me. Makes it very hard to headshot the soldier when you are pulling 10 fps from the rockets he i shooting at you.

They look like shit and completely ruin the visual style in a way I didn’t think possible. Thats my main problem.

To point out the flaws of that weapon since people keep saying that it’s overpowered.

Valve updated and reduced the mangler damage by 10%, which basically justifies people’s complaints. I believe it was necessary considering the fact that it held 5 rounds, which was excessive but slightly acceptable now.

In the end, the mangler doesnt effect me much anyway because I play pyro. I just reflect that shit and am immune to fire, plus the fact that I already play on no random crit servers to begin with (even though I tended to get alot of random crits, I think they are a terrible concept) means the mangler’s lack of random crits is a moot point. I do believe however, that it should be able to be crit-boosted by medics, intel caps, etc…

Basically what I dont like is how large the soldier’s arsenal is when compared to other classes. The mangler is a crazy, ridiculous weapon he really does not need when other classes could really use some new items. I would like some new pyro weapons to play with besides degreaser + axtinguisher/mail box.

I too, also hate the style and think it does not fit the tf2 theme. I understand its normal for tf2 to have wacky and humorous items, but futuristic space ray guns? That just doesn’t work IMO.

^^^This, although I hate the pyro so much because i always play as a spy, I have to admit he(/she?) could use some more weapons that would balance out his/her capabilities out to medium ranges.
