Pickup and Throw Combat?

I think it would be interesting to see how you could include the pickup and throw into a combat situation. Imagine it, a Headcrab is coming towards you but you pick up a rock or other piece of debris and throw it at it! It would of course not be as powerful as a weapon and the strength of the throw wouldn’t be as good as the Gravity Gun but it would enable combat situations similar to using the Gravity Gun. Plus it would be pretty realistic. (If I were to pick up a large rock and throw it a soldier, I’m pretty sure it will hurt him regardless of any armor that he has that’s made to stop bullets) It would be an interesting way to use the new physics engine.

You can pick up and throw phys objects, but the object will do little if any damage to baddy.
We want +use phys item pickup to be used as a tool not as a gravity gun replacement.

Yeah, it only works if you say, drop a barrel on a headcrab. Tossing a computer monitor at a Soldier wouldn’t do jack shit. (well, I think the soldier should flinch or block it, but not take damage from it, unless it’s like 1HP or something)

Read that and immediately thought of this

Anyway, I agree with you in the sence that throwing stuff should definately not be central to combat but it would be a trivial thing to kill scientists by throwing computers at their heads… and also entirely pointless.

I think it’s a pretty reasonable to have it do damage if you were to throw a cinderblock at someone’s face.

I was actually dissapointed that you couldn’t kill people by throwing things in Half-Life 2. It makes sense that three or four cinderblock throws would take a metrocop or w/e out. Or that dropping a computer on a headcrab a couple of times might kill it.
I wonder how difficult it would be to implement that into a Source game or mod.

It probably would be difficult enough to implement a charge meter that controls the velocity of the object being thrown, affected by values of the player’s velocity itself, and the overall “strength” of the player, seeing how it is, only weak creatures manage to get killed usually. Anything else that is human-sized or bigger only gets aggravated. Not really counting hitboxes for the head and other parts that are sensitive.

The velocity doesn’t really matter, because you’ll always throw it with the same amount of force. Your movement speed is not that important either, since you rarely move fast enough for it to make a real difference.
One thing that might matter is the height from which it’s thrown.

I didn’t mean that it would replace combat, I mean it could be a little thing added in that could help you take down enemies.

Utilising crates to the best of their ability :3

I think a gun might be more efficient for killing armed soldiers

No… No… I prefer this way.

Using the most important thing from the enemy as a shield. Impressive. So… what’s the most important thing for the HECU marines?

giggity

You’re assuming I was talking about hgrunts and not scientists, guards or anything else.

Your assuming that there will be cinder blocks in the game :3

The gravity gun is not supposed to be used in firefights!

What if you could pick up Barney’s and throw them at headcrabs! Like in Super Mario Bros 2! But what about mushrooms? Will they make you big?
