Photoshop CS4 texture tutorials...

I’m sorry, but that came across really condescending!

Does that make you angry? Do you feel blame?

I remember now, you are a bit of a dick.

Many textures are actually just photographs altered to the texture artist’s liking. Of course, this wasn’t as true long ago when 3D games were in their infancy, but at the time hand-made textures were just all around a better fit.

I would prefer to make a texture from scratch than modify an existing photo. I simply don’t have the time or inclination to go around and take pictures of all the types I would need.

That’s why there’s places like these:
https://urbandirty.com/
https://www.grungetextures.com/
https://texturez.com/
https://www.pixelperfectdigital.com/free_stock_photos/showgallery.php/cat/506
https://www.freephototextures.com/

Yes, but can you also use them for games?

Stock photos are released under fair use. They’re all yours.

Ah, but of note: Grungetextures.com specifies that it may not be used for commercial works, only non-commercial. Meaning if you use textures from their site you can’t sell whatever you’re using it for.

Try https://www.cgtextures.com/ as well.

The point is that if you want for example a photorealistic concrete wall in your game, it’s going to be really tough to paint that kind of surface from scratch and have it look good. Neither can you simple take a photo and map it to a 3d object, because the scale isn’t going to be correct and it is going to have seams when you tile it. What a texture artist does is grab a photo of a concrete wall, select a generic part of the surface and make it tile with itself enough times so it’s the correct scale. Then, grab the more interesting parts from the photo (cracks, stains, etc) and overlay them on the tiled image to make the pattern less obvious. That’s a really basic example.

Note my use of the word “usually”. Also remember the context of my post, refuting olddirtybastards claim that the ONLY way to get a decent texture was to use photos, as if anything other than a photo used as a texture will look like arse. There are PLENTY of great textures made every day without the use of photos. He seems to think that any good texture MUST be a slightly modified photo. He is wrong.

Two Great examples…District 9 and Avatar (District 9, awesome movie…the special effects texture artist who did the aliens is a woman, no I’m not sexist, that’s just kinda’ cool :jizz: )

Yeah, you can make plenty of great textures with dodge and burn and only start out with plain ugly gray/grey
