PC won't load the OS

here’s the deal:

I broke 1 pin in the CPU socket, so I had to get a new MB. Not a big deal really, got it pretty cheap.

The problem is, now the system won’t start the OS, the BIOS works just fine, the system recognises the HDD an RAM, but when it gets to loading windows, it just doesn’t (it doesn’t even show the Windows XP logo with the loading bar)

safe mode doesn’t work any better.

So I tried booting from a Windows CD, it loaded all the files, but when it got to “setup is starting windows”, it just seemingly froze.

Any ideas as to what is the problem? thanks in advance.

Ok, so I selected “Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC” and the everything was fine. Couldn’t repair the old OS though, hung at “installing devices”, so I set up a fresh one! Yay for me!

Assuming you didn’t break the CPU itself, what happens if you download an ubuntu live cd and boot to that instead?

In other words I should try a different OS (namely linux based), is that correct?

UPDATE: tried booting Win7, spat out the blue error screen saying ***STOP and some hex code right after ‘loading windows’

you should try a live-cd.
a live-CD Version doesn’t need an installation

excuse me for being completely ignorant, but how does this “live-cd” technology work? I assume it’s like a preinstalled plug&play version of ubuntu, that runs directly from a CD, right?

Ok, I guess I’ll try that!

sorry for double posting, forgot, that mine was was the last one already.

Normally when you change the motherboard, you need to reinstall the OS. This is because the OS is configured to work with the previous motherboard. There are however ways to save your OS so that you don’t need to reinstall it when changing motherboards. I’ll let you google some answers on that.

Hope this info helps. =s

right - it was like this with XP and older wins. with Vista and 7 you’ve just got to update your (MB-) drivers. there is a small chance to change your MB without reinstalling XP, but it’s not recommended and it’s a lucky thing.

what surely helps is to make a repair-install of XP because after that that you don’t have to reinstall all your software and all documents and settings are still there.

Yes, but the problem is, I can’t do that! As I said (wrote) it loads all the setup files, but freezes at “setup is starting windows”

Will try the live cd (I mean live USB stick)

Did you wipe the hdd first? Windows won’t let you install an older version on top of a newer one (I’ve tried). Windows 7 also doesn’t upgrade from Windows XP (as far as I know).

I did, no problem.

hrm…Is he upgrading to 64bit?

I have a registry patch for XP that allows 90% success rate when moving an HDD from one PC to another, but this seems like a different problem. If your PC crashes in the installation you might have dead components on it, if you have multiple ram sticks try one or the other and see if it stops crashing.

I had a server with similar issues recently. I’m assuming you have one of the newer Intel CPUs that have pads on the bottom, and the pins are in the socket. The CPU I installed in the bad socket (2 pins were broken so they wouldn’t connect to the pad on the CPU) had issues after it was powered up. If I took that CPU out, the system would boot fine, and stay running with no issues. If I put the CPU back in, the server got flaky, with random reboots (if it came up at all). I verified that the CPU was bad by putting it in the other socket, and the server stopped booting reliably. Luckily, I saw the broken pins before putting the good CPU in the bad socket. HP had to RMA the MB and CPU. The new board and replacement CPU worked fine with the original CPU.

Long story short, try a different CPU.

Post this plox.

Post the message you get in the blue screen of death, mainly where it says the STOP occured.

If you can, also locate the dump files and maybe a syslog and upload them here so we see if it was a kernel issue or something

Tried the live-cd usb stick version, didn’t work. Burn’t the CD, it got to loading the files from cd and remained there long after actually reading the files.

So I got back to BIOS, trying to spot any suspicios settings. And under “Standard CMOS features” next to time, date and similar crap I spotted “Halt on:” “All errors”

After changing that to “No errors”, the live-cd started just fine and I assume that windows setup will work as well.
Now while I’m on ubuntu, I’ll move the somewhat important files from C: to my other hdd partition and then repair or install a clean WinXP.

On a side note: any ideas as to what this lethal “error”, that stops the system from booting properly, could be?

[EDIT] WinXP setup still won’t work! Ubuntu live-cd does work! Why does my system hate windows so bad?

Does your new motherboard support your memory? Have you set the frequency’s and timings right in the BIOS?

I have non-ecc ddr2 ram and the freq is set to default (533) in bios.

Seriously people, I have nothing against linux 'n stuff, but I REALLY want my WinXP back! Or Win7! Or anything where HL2 works! Seriously!

WinXP setup still wont get past “setup is starting windows” after loading the setup files
Win7 setup gives a “*** STOP: 0x0000005c (0x0000010B, 0x00000001, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)” error after loading the setup files

Ubuntu Live-CD works fine.

Any ideas? Pics of my BIOS settings can be seen here
