Battling with Windows? You’re doing it wrong.
I’m not even going to bother going into some of the shit I’ve had to deal with when running Windows. Not even going to bother.
My experiences are hardly unique either. Just because you don’t have any issues doesn’t mean your next door neighbour isn’t beating his head against the table because the Windows XP install can’t detect your hard drive.
PC > consoles.
PCs do just about everything better than a console.
The only thing a console has over a pc is that it is made so that even people ignorant of technology can use it.
If you have the ability (and want) to learn about computers then go with them otherwise stick with consoles.
Sure each platform has it’s own choice of games but that is rather an opinion based approach rather than a factual one.
There does seem to be quite a convergence between PCs and consoles. An increase in multiple functions on most consoles, and the PS3 will even allow you to load other OSes.
Funny macs should be mentioned, they are in a lot of ways quite similar to the console. Custom OS, set hardware (well I know you can change HDDs in PS3 and 360) and combined hardware and software provider. Essentially what is the fundemental difference in function of a Mac and a PS3 loaded with linux? (Aside from the OS)
EDIT: Oh yeah, there’s bugger all good racing games on the PC! That’s my main reason for having a console.
GRID and Dirt2 are both pretty decent games.
I wouldn’t really call modern NeedForSpeed games ‘good’ but they are genuinely playable games.
Let’s not forget the fun free and playable trackmania nations forever.
Just because the newest Grad Turismo games, doesn’t mean that there aren’t ANY.
Lol, ironically I never could get into the GT series. I meant PGR series or Forza Motorsport, Rallysport challenge… (Can you tell I have a 360) I just kinda meant it suits the kind of racing games I play.
Which is perfectly ok.
It is understandable that people will pick the gaming device that suits their needs.
I have a nintendo DS and it suits my needs for portability when I don’t want to be carrying anything that cannot fit in my pocket.
I used to have a xbox 360 but I eventually sold it because I wasn’t using it as much and also I heard before hand when the price for the console was dropping so I thought I make full price back by selling it.
I use a PC more often because it suits my needs and has much more potential than a console.
I kind of hate how developers are putting so much of their resources towards consoles because it holds back the potential of PC games.
The hardware power for a PC is many times more powerful and has much more potential.
But the consoles are holding back that potential because developers want to make things more accessible to consoles for more profit.
Exactly. I’m a tad worried about Crysis 2, which is being developed for consoles as well as PC. I hope it won’t be a horribly optimized port like GTA4 was…
Yah the cry engine 3 looks much worse on the console compared to the cry engine 2.
But that is due to the weak hardware and no support for directx10 and certain resources that the computer has.
I have a feeling the cry engine 3 won’t be much of an improvement over the cry engine 2.
If developers put their concentration into only a computers capabilities then we would have games that look many times better and have many more features.
The hardware coming out in the present with the high end ATI 5000 series and the new high end Nvidia 400 series are so overpowered compared to the games coming out these days.
I built my newest pc back in late 2007 with an 8800gt OC in it and I have no problem running just about any game at maximum settings (1680x1050) unless they are horribly coded.
I have no need to build a new computer until games start to make my hardware obsolete and I don’t see that happening yet…mainly because of console support.
I suppose that is an advantage of a console over a PC, for a relatively small sum you are guaranteed for a period of about 5-8 years (projected life of current gen) you will have a device that will play anything that comes out for it. Whereas if it were all PC centric we’d have a lot of developers forgetting about the mid-low spec gamers and we’d need expensive upgrades every 6-12 months
It srikes me I’m coming over like a big proponent of console gaming, when I’m mostly PC, funny old world isn’t it. Having said that I like to collect consoles when I have a bit of dosh left spare at the end of the month.
Actually I built my pc back in late 2007 for around 600-700 USD and it still plays everything at max and requires no upgrading.
And don’t start talking about price because And an xbox 360 and a ps3 cost almost as much (at the time) when you add all the peripherals.
Also basing a pc vs console debate on price is just wrong as the pc hardware is much more advanced and hard drive space is much more. Also a computer is meant to do more.
And most people who have a console also have a pc already even if it is not a gaming pc. That is added cost rather than just having a pc and no console.
Also note that my 8800gt was a mid end card for nvidia.
And console graphics look ugly when you compared them to the pc version even if the consoles are holding back the potential of a computer.
you also have to think that developers would optimize their games more for the PC if the majority of their income didn’t come from a console market. I seriously prefer the PC, but it sucks how the majority of my friends all play on the PS3 and 360. I used to own a 360, but after it overheating and dying 900 times, and Microsoft’s continued tyrannical presence in the video game industry, i got rid of it.
My theory is that since the industry is consolidating into these super companies, something is going to happen to shake the balance of the scale and encourage growth and innovation again. I.E. the PC market. hopefully there will be some breathing room soon for new developers and publishers to take risks and innovate again (like the mid to late 90s). I remember having a huge container of floppies with so many unique and interesting games which i bought on the cheap, nowadays we see games cost 50-80 dollars with an occasional indie.
I don’t dislike consoles per say, some games i think play and feel better on a console. i do however hate the what the console business model does to the market. Huge developers playing it safe and releasing the same product annually creates a boring selection of games. maybe the PS1 had the best game selection for a console, i remember that Sony really catered to developers with the PS1 and it showed having such a diverse group of games released.
I miss the 90s…
I miss the 90s and also the 80s…
I wasn’t meaning to say it was entirely a cost thing, my point was more like because the consoles will be around for longer, it stabilises the graphics market, meaning most games will still run on a mid to lower end market PC machine for longer as well. I still run most things on higher graphics settings on my 2 year old laptop. Having said that I haven’t played crysis or whatever the current eye candy is
19XXs FTW…
Well I would rather have the gaming market progress much faster.
I wouldn’t mind upgrading a part or two every 3 years instead of every 6 years…
That way I can experience improved gameplay mechanics.
I want to get as close to the virtual realm as possible.

Did you know that out of all games purchased last year, only 20% were bought for pc, although that is a 1% increase from teh year before.
Because most of those people are not educated on computer technology.
They just want a box which is meant to play games without worrying about anything else.
Also computer game piracy is high, mainly because my first point being all the people ignorant of computers are mainly using consoles.
Console piracy happens but to a lesser degree and usually by the very same people who know about computer game piracy.
Eventually if the market stays this way the computer gamers will incorporate consoles and console piracy will increase making it balanced in market sales.
The PS3 has already been cracked and eventually it will be pirated as well.
Except not everybody can afford that. All most casual gamers want is, as you put it yourself, a box that’ll play games. That’s why the Wii is so damned popular.
