PC is reseting

My new pc is reseting when I start playing some games, like left 4 dead 2 or cod black ops. Some people told me that I have to restart the Bios, but I don’t how can I do this.my system is Windows 7 (64 bits),but when I got the pc the system was Ubuntu,so i changed to windows 7…

hardware:

-Cpu Intel Core I5 650 3.20GHz Dual-Core LGA 1156 Box

-Ram Patriot 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
-Hard Disk Seagate HDD 500GB SATA2 7200RPM
-video card Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 768M GDDR5 192bit

Replace your power supply.

This^

Yep, was having this problem myself and it turned out to be the power supply. Sent it in for a replacement but it’s taking so long :fffuuu: .

thaks guys,I ll see what i can do about my power supply

Oh, in case I wasn’t too clear, I meant replace it for a brand-name power supply with enough amperage on the 12v rails and preferably 550+ watts of output to allow some headroom for upgrading. The power supply is one of the most important parts of the build, you really don’t want to skimp on it. A cheap one like the one you have could easily blow and take your entire system with it.

On a build like that i’d use 600 watt minimum. Test on another psu first, incase that isn’t the culprit.

Hmmm, have you checked for any signs of overheating? Check for clogged fans and stuff like that… try to monitor the temperature of your system too.

Though if a CPU intensive task doesn’t make it reset, while a GPU intensive game does, it would make sense to blame the power supply.

You know, the amount of ‘watt’ it displays on the box isn’t the only thing you should look for when buying powersupplies…

^True.
You should look for known PSU brands. This means Seasonic,Corsair,Enermax even OCZ. I have a crappy “Delux 500w” (I think the real wattage is 200W) and I’m gonna order(today) a SeaSonic S12II 620W,80+Bronze. Totally worth the money.

If there are no actual problems with your current PSU, what makes you say that?

I guess I’ll throw a few more things out:

  1. When looking for a PSU, first thing you should look for is brand name. I suggest you buy PSUs off of Newegg since they usually carry good brands and have a great return policy. As was suggested earlier, corsair, seasonic, OCZ are all good brands. If a PSU is much cheaper than others in its “wattage”-range, its not a good PSU. For example, a good 650 watt PSU you should be able to find for around 80 or 90 dollars.
  2. Look for total CONTINUOUS power, not just MAX output power. When looking at name-brand PSUs this isn’t that big of an issue, but many companies say that their PSU outputs something like 500watts when in reality it can only support 300watts under normal usage, and 500watts for a few seconds.
  3. As I said previously, amperage on the 12v rail(s) is VERY important. Corsair is usually quite good at this, their 750watt PSU has 60amps on one 12v rail (the less rails the better, usually), which helps you maintain rock-solid system stability

Don’t skimp out on a PSU

Sorry to hijack this thread, but what’s better,

Antec 380W Dual 12v rail 17A each.

or

ThermalTake 430W (real max 350) single 12v rail, 18A

I’ve had both for a while and I still don’t know which is the best one.

Not to put a damper on this thread, but regarding how my last puter died, my IT neighbor said it was my next grade up power supply that probably fried my motherboard’s pop can doohickies.

There are always exceptions. Obviously if your current power supply powers your system fine there’s no need to upgrade, but be prepared if it can’t handle future video cards/processors.

@sersoft: it really depends on your usage. either one would be pretty weak for current gen high-end computer hardware, but if you’re looking for some extra juice for your video cards the antec would be the better bet, although really I would go for a more powerful PS out of those two (unless, as I said, you’re running a business-oriented machine with integrated graphics and fan cooling).

Okay, just to make sure because I haven’t found anything about the 12v rail thing for my PSU. I have an ATI HD5870 and am using (or was, I sent it in for a replacement) a Corsair GS800. Anyone want to tell me whether it should do the trick? It was working fine for a little bit but then died. I’m not sure if the PSU just failed or if it’s just not powerful enough.

That’s a great power supply, very efficient, one powerful 12v rail, can even handle 1000watt under heavy stress (not recommended, but this thing is a rock).

It should suit you for many upgrades to come, unless you’re planning on quad sli’ing GTX 480s or something.

Awesome. If only I had splurged and gotten an i7 and I’d have one of the highest grade computers you could put together now :awesome: .

So I guess it was just a one time failure of that particular unit. Here’s hoping.
