“The game of a lifetime” Zzap! 64. May 1985.Absolutely go get the FreeSpace Open installer so you can install mods- they released the source code some time ago and there’s some serious mods out there, including graphics upgrades and a few other things that make the game still look pretty damn good.
Edit: Looks like the launcher Knossos is the launcher of choice these days. The Freespace Upgrade Project if memory serves replaces the meshes with higher detailed models & textures and is kind of the starting point for going down the rabbit hole.

Freespace 2, my absolute favorite of the genre. Getting to play it again with the fresh paint was great! Still to this day, I’m sad that its story was never finished.
