Old School RPG's?

So, pretty much this summer I’ve been playing through all the old school RPG’s that I missed when I was a kid. So far, I’ve completed Mother, Earthbound (Loved it), FF3, FFVII, and I’m mid-way through Chrono cross.

I was just wondering If there are any really outstanding Rpg’s that I may have missed. I’ll most likely start mother 3 as soon as I’m done with chrono cross. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Legend of Grimrock?

I think he meant RPG’s that are actually old.

Fallout 1 and 2, Baldur’s Gate, Arcanum, Planescape Torment, Morrowind, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2.

Diablo 1 and 2 although I don’t know if you missed these or not.

Off topic: Was doing a search to remind myself of rpgs I’ve played (After so long I have a tendency to not be able to remember what games I’ve played without hearing their name) and in a top 10 best old school rpgs somebody listed LoZ: LttP gah, fucking idiots who don’t know what a RPG is.

This ^^

I bought KotoR 1 this past week on Steam and just spent all weekend playing it. I had forgotten how good a game it is.

And come September 18th, I’ll be playing Baldur’s Gate enhanced version.

I’d have to say Fallout 1 & 2 (2 being slightly better for numerous technical reasons). I’m not a massive RPG fan, but the first two Fallouts really are something special. Don’t be put off them by their modern-day FPS equivalents. They’re totally different.

darn, people always say this about fallout

I never played (or even heard of) fallout before Fallout 3, which I liked

and I never played (or even heard of) the Elder Scrolls before oblivion, which I liked.

I missed the boat pretty badly, I’ve tried going back and playing older games like morowind and Baldur’s gate, but unless it’s SS2 or C&C, I just can’t stomach the dated graphics any more.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is the greatest RPG I’ve ever played. 137 hours of pure goodness with tough as nails gameplay and lots of really funny writing. Give it a try, it can be had for $20 or so on Amazon new.

It also comes with a CD of the game’s excellent music. There are plenty of more minor criticisms to levy at the game, but on the whole it’s a solid package.

Xenogears is also excellent. Deep story, fun gameplay, lengthy at around 72 hours. Beware of the second disc though- the gameplay changes a great deal because the developers had their funding pulled at the last second and things start to get confusing. Even so, it’s still a very rewarding game for people who put in the time.

Still technically in RPG territory (and old school because of it’s similarities to the original game), I also recommend Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Even if you haven’t played the first two games, it’s a great game and very self-contained from the larger narriative, being a prequel.

I haven’t gotten far in this one yet, despite having had it for years. But this is also a classic RPG which many current games owe much to. Be advised- this game is REALLY hard. You WILL have to grind to survive.

System Shock 2 seems to have pretty heavy RPG elements, and it’s old.

Definitely Fallout 1 and 2. Amazing games.

Good old games or https://www.GOG.com

Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Both are amazing games. They’re both on the Steam Store. Also, I advise you to stay away from Invisable War. It’s OK, but it’s not the masterpieces that DX and DXHR are.

And another one, System Shock 2 (I suggest using a torrent to play this, as it’s a hidden gem so you might not find it normally).

The answer really depends on what you mean when you say “old” and “RPG”. And it depends on your system

If you mean really old and PC, i would suggest
Betrayal at Krondor
One of the few games in my life I just couldnt stop playing until Ive beaten it. Could get tricky to get it running today, I remember fighting with my 640k, if you know what I mean. DosBOX 4tw!
Diablo is still one of the best games out there (way better, not even compareable with its successors), but you probably have already played it.

Around the same time on consoles you just have to stick with squaresoft (almost). The SNES had so many excellent RPGs. Examples:
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI (or did you mean that by saying ff3?)
Zelda 3
Oh, just some note for ff6: the GBA version is way better. But to play it on a big screen, it would be necessary to download an emulator with the rom, but that would be illegal, so you should stick with the PSX version (it has an opening and ending cinematic, but it is buggy and has annoying loading times and stupid names for the spells and summons, so I would suggest watching the cinematics on utube and stick with the GBA version if you can).

After the DOS/SNES era, you should really play Final Fantasy VIII if you liked FF7. Its just a little bit more grown up, but the same quality.

And if other people are allowed to mention KOTOR 1+2 (and I really loved them too) or even Deus Ex : HR (which is mediocore and everything but old), I think im allowed to say Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. Just the best RPG Ive ever played, and I finished most of them. However you should get the latest inofficial patch, its buggy as hell in the vanilla version.

Would be nice to hear if you decided to play some games suggested in this thread.

Add Daggerfall to the list for an “old” oldschool RPG. What it lacks in individuality it certainly makes up for in atmosphere, and it’s free.

Unless you are the type of person that doesn’t care about atmosphere, in which case, I would feel sorry for you, but I doubt that.

I would also suggest FF8 if you liked FF7, although the plot gets a lot worse once you’re deeper in.

Star Ocean for the SNES, great gameplay and story. I’m not sure if it was released in US, but there are English patched (J)Roms floating around.

Earthbound (SNES), Mother (NES), Fire Emblem 1-9 (Various consoles), Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy 1-6, & Chrono Trigger (SNES). Legend of Zelda if that counts.

Morrowind.
Wizardry.
Deus Ex.
Torment. (Gibbelin should -hopefully- remember that)
Icewind Dale.
Baulder’s Gate.
Final Fantasy X and X-2. (newer, but I only played them and can suggest them.)
Diablo.
System Shock. (if it counts.)
Fallout.
Gothic 1&2.
Neverwinter Nights.

That’s all I can think of right now.

Edit: Damn most of that was already posted – this forum has good taste.

Oooh, I forgot about System Shock, that was a great game. One of my all time favorites.

And we’ll not speak of the second Deus Ex game.

Would Thief 1&2 count?

Fucking Digimon.

Also, the first Dark Cloud was addictive as fuck from what I remember.

Wait… Has no one mentioned the Ultima series? WTF!
