Oculus VR Headset

Anyone seen this?

Seems like it will be the future of gaming. In my head, it sounds like the visual equivalent of the difference between tinny 2.1 speakers and bassy high quality headphones - in other words you need to try it yourself but it’s already sounding revolutionary in terms of immersion. Can’t wait to play something like Half-Life 2 or Mirror’s Edge, both of which are currently supported.

I don’t see that’d work. The camera in Mirror’s edge moves around a lot. Head-tracking doesn’t seem like it would work very well in conjunction with that.

Or is it just supposed to give you motion sickness?

It’s supported but I wouldn’t say all games are meant to be played with VR. I’m sure all games require a bit of tweaking in order to be playable, like the HUD in HL2.

They were saying that games really need to be built from the ground up to take full advantage of the product, but the potential is kinda mind blowing.

Stop worrying about making your game this super-immersive virtual reality mess that focuses 100% on redundant technological advances and just make a good fucking game?

I don’t care if I can smell what’s happing underneath my character’s arms. How about gimmee somethin’ with tasty gameplay?
That doesn’t have gimmicky mechanics that don’t work, or a million chest-high walls disguised as musical chairs to hide behind,
or people who aren’t exclusively white/have a linguistic library that includes more than a few cusses and the greek alphabet.

i wanna make and play a game about a crime solving dog that makes heavy use of virtual smell reality tech

I want to make a game where you can pick your characters nose

The two are not mutually exclusive.

We’re talking bideo juegos, ya jabroni.

Where’s the game where you play as a 62 year old single mother from peru who escapes to the american wilderness 237 years after global economic fallout and now must fight and eat hellish musclemonsters to survive long enough to reach the remnants of a society where sign language dominates and words are used for currency (dictionaries of any language being the most valuable item one can find)

this wasn’t already a thread?

It will have to clash with the IllumiRoom, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s like Wiimote vs Kinect argument: periferal advancements, yes, but at the expense of (mostly) poor game quality.
Ok, too soon to judge (they haven’t even came out), but recent history makes me look with suspicion at those new technologies IF game quality falls (if it does not, then why not?).

Call me oldschool, but the priority, as someone else said:

You know full well you want this to happen.

Badass

The difference is that, for all we know, Illumiroom is vaporware. The Oculus Rift can already be preordered (300 bucks), and the general reaction of people who have used it -including gaming journos- is that it’s a total game changer (no pun intended).

The two are completely separate issues. With or without the VR headset the priority should always be to make good games - the VR therefore has no bearing on the quality of games and therefore no relevance to the argument. Unlike the Wiimote it’s not changing the way you play the game. It’s like a set of decent headphones as opposed to poor speakers - the effect on the game is minimal and superficial but radically changes your perception of it and the level and quality of immersion you experience.

That’s all it’s doing.

Either way, I’m fucking psyched for it. This summer is going to be the summer of saving up for a cintiq and a rift.

I’m really, really, really indifferent about this. I’m even kinda befuddled at how much hype this is generating on people.

I just posted two new videos of the half-life VR mod, one of the gravity gun and ravenholm and one of playing through Black Mesa: Source with it a bit (there are conflicts between the two mods but I was able to play enough to get the feel for what’d be like, hopefully other people want this to happen as much as I do.

Check them out:

(on vimeo b/c EMI was blocking it because of the background music  It is on my youtube channel as well though)

Immersion is a powerful thing my friend. I personally am not that hyped on this because I am not an early adopter of new tech. Too much of a broke ass for that.

That’s pretty awesome. I wonder how realistic it feels to play like that.

The mechanic of headtracking seems pretty annoying to me, mainly the issue of turning 180, but I probably have to experience it myself to form a valid opinion of it.

I am however all for the idea of simply putting the screen right in front of my eyes, and the addition of illusion of depth as a bonus, so I’m moderately excited to get one of these.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
