Oblivion Performance Deterioration

I’m playing on vanilla Oblivion, (tried playing with the unofficial patch + supplements, and operation optimization to no avail) and after playing for about 2-3 minutes, the game gets laggy. It starts out fine, can run it on fullest specs as well as it runs on lowest specs, but after a while of the game running it begins to lag. I have tried everything setting related, but it happens even on the lowest setting. This is happening even if the game is idle. I can be sitting still and after a minute or two it begins to lag.

Nothing outside of Oblivion is interfering with it.

Specs:
Radeon HD 5850
8 GB RAM
AMD Athlon X2 260

Windows 7
Steam version of Oblivion

Check the temperatures of your PC, namely your video card. It could be that it’s overheating and downclocking itself automatically to reduce heat

Temperature is remaining a constant 80-85 F (~26-30 C), even up to when the bug manifests itself.

All that ram isn’t doing you any good. https://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

Could maybe help.

check if your HDD needs to be defragmented, if it’s a 5400RPM, upgrade to a 7200RPM and you’ll most definitely get faster read speeds and lower random seek time.

WD Caviar Black, it’s 7200 RPM. I defrag pretty frequently, but haven’t since downloading Oblivion so I’ll give that a shot.

Doubting the RAM is an issue but I’ll patch the exe too.

Get a better CPU.
that 260 is holding you down.

A lot.

I’ll admit it’s not great, but it’s Oblivion we’re talking about here. I can max out Crysis with 2x AA (or any other game in my library for that matter,) and I don’t get this kind of shit.

Whats the clock speed of your processor.

3.2 GHz

That should be far more than enough for oblivion, your problem isn’t hardware. This seems odd. You haven’t over looked any of the duhh solicitations have you? Like drivers, reinstalling the game and so forth.

The only other thing I can think of might be the Data Execution Prevention.

I’ll reinstall it again, but I already have tried once. I’ll delete my save and settings this time too. :frowning:

EDIT: BAH! Just Googled disabling DEP, and found out it was easy. Oh well. I’ll try that if it happens again once Oblivion downloads.
EDIT2: Happened again on reinstall. Disabling DEP for Oblivion did not help.

Have you used the Oblivion stutter remover. My vanilla Fallout:NV is unplayable without it.

He fixed it. It was codecs (steam forums)
