NPC: Hit reactions

Ever noticed, that enemies and allies in HL2 never showed a reaction, if they were hit by a gunshot (excepting death)?

That’s like shooting…somehting that feels no pain…and that’s simply annoying in my eyes!

The zombies in L4D for example have hit animations
and also in HL1, npcs performed an animation, too:

(the arms of the barneys swing backwards, if you shoot them)

Maybe it is a little bit too late for this, but I would really suggest to implement pain reactions!

well, they do go ‘‘Ah’’, ‘‘Oh!’’ and ‘‘STOP FUCKING SHOOTING ME IT HURTS LIKE HELL ARGH’’ when you shoot them, so they show signs of pain.

at the time HL2 was released hit reactions was butt a mere dream for developers/gamers. however they probably didn’t feel a need to change it in the episodes so they just left it :expressionless:

I see hit reactions in HL2 all the time, not the greatest, but they’re there anways.

Also you should have asked this in the “Got A Question” thread, as I think it was answered there already.

Go check out the original Hitman, which I am fairly certain came out before HL2 (you know, the one where you can’t see more than 50 feet in front of you) - it has native, dynamic hit reactions. This has been around for quite a while.

Or Goldeneye 64 :expressionless:

Friendly NPCs don’t react when hit in HL2 because your attacks don’t damage them.

Enemies on the other hand, show visible movements when shot. Have you not seen a CP’s head rock back when you hit him with the 9mm?

I can’t check this out right now, but if you watch the first video, you see at the end, that the elite combine soldier doesn’t show any reactions.
Also I have compared HL1 with Source:
While Barney reacts to shootings in HL1, he strangly doesn’t in HL:S.

“Also you should have asked this in the “Got A Question” thread, as I think it was answered there already.”

I asked it there, but never got an answer.

“friendly NPCs don’t react when hit in HL2 because your attacks don’t damage them.”

But enemies can. And if a combine shoot a friend, he doesn’t show any reactions, too.

The combine can be forgiven what with them having cybernetic components and stuff wired in.

I’m no giant, telepathic slug, but if I were to create an army of supersoldiers, pain and personnal feelings would be the first things to go.

As for rebels, they flinch slightly and vocalise a lot. “Gruagh! My arm!” This never really bothered me as a melodramatic animation of some guy doing a monologue about how he misses his freshly severed fingers. It would just be annoying for friendlys hot on your heels only to pause whenever they take a hit to perform an animation (thus getting shot up further)

Hurr durr kinky.

I am not talking about stopping their attack for performing an hit animation, but at least jerk a little bit or something like that.

And if the player hurts a guard or scientist, while they are not in an attack situation, they should react in a similar way as seen in the video and not just acting like a concrete wall or something like that.

Same goes for enemies, who are currently in idle animation and haven’t noticed the player:
If the player shoots them into the neck, they should jerk and then turn and run around.

THEY FUCKING DO

They do.

I think the OP just hasn’t paid enough attention.

I think the OP hasn’t played HL2, because when I do my pulse rifle makes the Combine more than a bit jumpy.

The NPCs make movements. End of story, play the games.

Really? In that case I’d like to suggest some sort of gibbing system implemented, to stay true to the original Half Life.

I suggest that in the opening sequence the player starts out with a nice little ride on a train car, that we’ll refer to as a tram, that goes through out the facility.

OK guys, then I have to replace my eyes…

But you have to admi, that the Combine soldier in the video shows absolutely no reaction to it.

I am just suggesting that the NPCs in Black Mesa should also react to hits (as for example the Barney in the video). Nothing more…

It is a single boody video, combine react to bullets in many other situations.

It doesn’t matter anyway, BM is re-creating Half Life 1, and NPCs react in that.

K, thanks!

I’ve always thought Half-Life would be improved by having the main character be a strong-silent type. I’m thinking… physicist?
