No Third Person Model?

Great mod. Loving it. Although to see that there is no third person model for Gordon was disappointing. You have all these great models in the game, but Gordon himself never was created. Seems… off. Plus playing in third person mode would have been fun, but as of right now the model for Gordon is just a grey figure with no animations tied to it.

Also for anyone that doesn’t know how to go third person type the following in console.

sv_cheats 1
thirdperson (or thirdperson_mayamode or thirdpersonshoulder) All are different view points.

It would’ve taken more time for something they don’t really need in the game. Plus, Half-Life has never been a third person game, especially since there’s this whole motif of the player being Gordon and seeing everything through his eyes.

I understand it would have been time consuming, but considering the detail that this game has, you would think they would have modeled the main character. I get what you are saying as far as game play is concerned. Yah they don’t need it, but it still would have been a cool feature.

I think Xman already answered your question: it would be pointless to include models ingame that aren’t displayed. It would take up memory and cost the developers a lot of time.

As you’ve already pointed out, you can’t see the model unless you cheat. You might as well say “Hey, when I noclip to the outside of this map some textures disappear. I think you should fix that.”

I think the real solution to this problem… is to not cheat!

You have to enable sv_cheats 1 to use the command. Just because the command has the word cheats in it doesn’t really mean anything. How is third person mode cheating?

Now if I was using impluse 101, then THAT would be cheating.

that’s the one mistake that valves FPS design has: why would legs and a body be less immersive than just the arms?

games that got it perfectly are mirror’s edge and dark messiah of might and magic. (in both, you can see arms and legs doing reasonable movements, even when climbing a ladder)

my suspension of disbelief comes much easier if i don’t have the feeling i control two disembodied arms.

You could replace the third person model of BM with another.
Maybe you can find a 3rd pers. GF model in Source filmaker or in some mod website.

However it will not have animations and this could mess up its bones.

You can play in 3rd person, if you write in console sv_cheats 1 and thirdperson
but this is the result you’ll get:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vng6Tiag4UQ

In the end you should give up.

I was disappointed and at the same time ammused. The grey model seems to be a texture-removed model of gordon from the original half-life. Also that’s a lot more than you got in Half-Life 2 which didn’t even have a placeholder model for thirdperson, all you saw were the viewmodels floating in midair. They might be working on an actual gordon model anyway, though, since deathmatch should be in the works and perhaps at that point, you’ll be able to change ur single-player model, too.

Some rock-solid logic you have there. Either way, I’ve made my point. Model isn’t seen in-game, no point to include it. You can wait for Deathmatch or Xen and replace it with model of someone wearing an HEV suit.

Black Mesa uses the half life 2 default viewmodel, from hl2\models\player.mdl

Yeah…they should have totally modelled a Gordon model even though we’d never see it…and then add an extra 10 months onto the development timeline.
While they were at it they should have added hundreds of other models which we’d never see. Perhaps they could have created the entire cast of Jurassic Park and included them in the game for us also to not see.

I heard that they already made a Gordon player model but it’s not for thirdperson, it’s for Deathmatch so it is still being worked on.

Oh, it seems valve added that in at some point, since that wasn’t the case at release. My bad.

There’s no reason to be snarky. A thirdperson model for gordon falls within reasonable expectations. Jurassic Park dinosaurs does not. Also the devs may be slow, but i seriously doubt a single model would take 10 months to fabricate.

Wanna bet?

So you’re saying it took them almost 9 years to develop and in that time they only created 10, maybe 11 models?

on topic: thirdperson IS a cheat, by the way, since it can give an unfair advantage in multiplayer (able to look around corners and, to a very limited extent, behind you). I remember it was actually a pretty big exploit when it was available in Left 4 Dead.

Personally I don’t see a problem with not making a player model for Gordon when its in a first person perspective (and a single player portion of the game when really is the need to see the character model when it was designed to be seen in a first person perspective), after all when you have everything else to focus on (around 2000 objects, quote me if I’m wrong) there’s no time especially since if they did a character model for Gorden they would have to model, rig, texture and make custom animation sets which would take a long time to do and in result we most likely would of been delayed till it was done right, so personally I’m thankful they delivered.

Remember guys the dev team for BM where doing this in their spare time, unpaid and we got a free game so stop complaining lol, it maybe not perfect but personally I think its near as damn it, especially since done by fans and not valve them self’s (personally I think its 100x better than valves remake Half-Life : Source).

One thing to remember is this is version one so maybe we may see new content upon the games next update and with the Xen section in production, I expect we will see a lot more content, exciting times indeed, congrats Black mesa team you have done us Half-life fans proud, keep up the good work! =]

Like I stated at the start of my post. Great mod, tons of fun. I am really enjoying it. Third person mode would just be an added feature and I’m sure the dev team would have no problem modeling the hero himself, considering the amount of work that obviously went into this mod. I was just a little surprised is all. With the amount of detail in this mod, it seemed… odd… that the main hero himself was never modeled.

Can’t wait to see what is in store for this mod though. I would be all over some multiplayer :stuck_out_tongue:

BMDM will hopefully have a gordon model, which they can then use for the player in single player

/thread

No, it does not.

Half-Life has always been first person, and will always be first person. Don’t like it? Then go develop your own third person version. Otherwise, leave the devs alone so they can continue to focus on things that actually matter. Like ohhhh, I dunno, the entire last third of the game.

assuming they actually make a gordon model for Deathmatch, then it does become a reasonable request to add in gordon’s model to the SP, as it is trivial work (the model should either work straight out of the box, or require minimal tweaking to work)
