Next-gen x-box

Thing is, consoles don’t need as much ram as a computer because all that ram is dedicated to games. Computers run a lot of applications at the same time and thus need to have more spare ram than consoles.

4gb for a console is a lot in comparison, since the amount of ram the OS needs is very small and the rest is for games only.

To put it in perspective, my PC has 4gb of ram and right now it’s using 2.4gb of ram between all the shit I have open. In a console, let’s reduce that amount to something like 100mb at max just for the OS and all its apps. That’s 3.9gb just for games. Not even the newest, most demanding PC exclusives in the market right now need that much.

Now add to that the amount of optimization you can do in a console game and you can guess how impressive that amount of ram is for a console.

edit: and computers always need some spare ram left to work properly, consoles can just fill it up to the brim and don’t have to worry about unexpected stuff getting on in it.

I know Crytek has been lobbying console makers for 8 gigs MINIMUM for the next-gen tech they’d like to develop (and most likely are well into developing).

We’re gonna see the law of diminishing returns hit the next gen hard if they aren’t willing to go really, really big with the hardware specs. And I’m sure they know that.

Crytek can suck a dick.

I lost faith in Crytek ever since the broken DX11 implementation in Crysis 2.

the last sex box had very little ram, standard media player but the cpu was pretty epic and the grafix chip was cutting edge for about 10 months. That is what we will see. BR is now standard, microshaft has a ton of experience with PPC architecture and ram gets cheaper by the day. All they need is Nvidia to make a cutting edge chip and blammo, new console

Fix’d

You know what a console with a good CPU and graphics card and 8 gigs of RAM is, Crytek? A PC.

Exactly. Stay there, and you can make good games for you and they can have good games for themselves.

Wait. Aren’t consoles just computers designed for a specific purpose, gaming in this case? What actually defines a console?

That.

That’s pretty much the exact definition. It’s funny because people always say “I play on something made for gaming, not a PC” and yet PCs are better at gaming than the consoles.

They’re better at throwing a lot at the processes that gaming requires, but there’s no way to optimize them to be pure gaming machines. Also, assuming your definition of “game” still attaches to the word “play” more than “sport”, consoles are the way to go.

I’m not going to back a horse in this race, but to say something flat out like that in a huge sweeping statement on the subject of a form of media that allows for so much flexibility and variety is fucking idiotic. It’s dark ages bullshit.

If PCs were truly just better than consoles for gaming, the market for consoles would be a niche. Not non-existent - consoles are great for playing with friends in person, for instance - but very small.

(I think; price might also be a factor but I’m not actually up to date on PC prices.)

That is true but I don’t remember the last game I’ve seen with local multiplayer on a console. It’s not very common anymore.

Price will always be a factor.

Price, ease-of-use and convenience.

A lot of people just want to pop in a game and play. No installation, no drivers and no patches (well, not so much these days).

Even though Steam made that a lot easier on the PC side, lots of people nowadays only see the PC as the work and Facebook machine.

Also, to a lesser extent, much more efficient in terms of power consumption.

Sounds like a horrible idea. Cloud gaming is far away, I mean, what countries can actually provide fibre optics to a significantly large part of the population. Japan, S Korea, Sweden (fuck yeah!) and possibly the Netherlands. Nah, at least 5 more years for that to be properly implemented.

Which has exactly zero to do with my point.
