New Eye Shader?

Hey guys.

judging from the screenshots I have seen and videos you are not using the new Eye shader that valve developed, but must have decided to wait untill Ep3 to include it.

The shader works and looks great and I dont see difference in frame rates using it.

Here is how it looks

(I removed the obama model so I could post the finished shader)

So if you guys want the code for this shader just ask me, I can do it all for you.

Also I can make it fallback to normal eyes if run in DX8.
This is based of a code Pelpix dicovered. I know he will get angry if I dont mention him.

I didn’t know Obama was using a new eye shader.

Honestly, I find the old version more realistic. The new one makes his eyes look like they’re made of glass and have their own source of light.

Yeah, his eyes look kinda buggy. Like he just saw something unpleasant.

I think somewhere in between would be best. The old one looks a little dull and dead but the new one looks too shiny and glazed to be realistic. Have a look your eyes in the mirror and I’ll bet they’re not as shiny as the new shader. (Unless you’ve been crying.)

Can we see more comparison shots with different lighting? It looks to me like the difference between these shaders is strongly dependent on the lighting situation.

the new one is the best - Zero can you explain what’s going on behind the scenes with the ‘shader?’ It looks like the eye material has self-illumination and an environment map.

Jesus fuck, are we really discussing about whether to include slightly shinier eyes!

How the hell can you tell what shader they’re using for their eyes in a static screenshot or a video that doesn’t close in on the eyes with flickering lights? The only thing I ever noticed with the eye shaders is the small amount of reflection and the way they absorb flashlight lighting for a second.

i think this is a better example. you can see how the light reflects more off one side of the iris where the light is coming in directly, but there’s still a little bit of glassiness.


though honestly that detail is so minute I’d barely notice it either way.

yes, I agree with the new shader. Seems like something that would be easy to implement yet would add loads of personality to the characters.

Even though the newer one is more flashy, it’s still more realistic looking imo.

luminous eyes in a dark room are -4 for stealth. Is a fact!
